Heavy Dibber
Here’s a very useful dibber
made from bits and pieces of old broken floats which I found during
my wanderings around local waters.
I use this float to reach
shy surface feeding fish a good-way from the bank, and it has become
a firm favourite...
The top is from a Drennan
crystal insert float, which I superglued to a weighted balsa-bottomed
waggler (see diagram).
This combination gives you
the weight to cast a fair-distance and the option to insert different
coloured sight-tips, or even mini-starlights for late evening sessions. How
to fish the heavy dibber.
Start off by catapulting maggots/casters to the surface feeding fish...
try to get them scrambling for the freebies!
Lock the float onto the line with a couple of shot either side of the
eye, use enough weight to cock the float to your satisfaction.
Start off with about three-foot depth to the hook and adjust until you
start to get bites.
Cast out over the feeding fish - so as not to scare them... fire in
some loose feed, and gently draw the float into the middle of the fish.
Bites are usually quick - sometimes fish hook themselves! It’s fun,
fast and furious. I’ve caught roach, rudd, chub, perch and carp using
this method.
Even had a tench once! Try it out - it costs nothing!
