Shirebrook Angling Club

BARLOW FISHING TRIP

On Sunday 22nd April 2007 Shirebrook Angling Club (SAC) took 13 of its young members along with 8 adult's members, 3 of which were NFA angling coaches: Tim Fairhurst, Robert Hayes and Alan Hayes, on a fishing trip to Barlow fishery near Chesterfield.

When we arrived we were greeted as usual by the friendly owner Rex and he told the children which pond they were fishing on. It was a beautiful warm day with odd black clouds passing over.

Two of the young members asked if they could try their hand at fly fishing to see if they caught a rainbow or brown trout. None of the young fly fishermen had managed to land a trout by lunchtime. Then later in the day about 1.15pm, NFA angling coach Alan Hayes caught a trout on an orange and black buzzer, so he handed his rod to Alex Everett to land the fish which put up a really good fight with Alex as it leaped out of the water several times.

With instructions from NFA coach Alan Hayes, Alex finally managed to land it the rainbow trout which weighed about 1lb 9oz. Then about and hour later Alan caught another one, so he passed the rod to Jordan Hackett to land it, but sadly it got off when Jordan did not keep his line tight. The two young fishermen improved greatly and they managed to get their lines out quite a distance after a few hours practice.

Then later on Alan caught another fish and handed the rod to Jordan again and under instruction from Alan, Jordan managed to land a brown trout weighing in at 1lb 10oz. Both young fly anglers really enjoyed their day.

The other young members stayed with the other adult supervisors who were coarse fishing and they caught loads of Tench, Roach, Carp, Chub, Rudd, Bream and Gudgeon. The best fish caught was by Wesley Wood, which was about a 3lb bream, Wes was really pleased as he said that's the biggest bream he had ever caught.

Then just as the club was getting ready to organise the group photo it started to rain.

Overall everyone had good positive feedback and SAC would also like to take this chance to thank the owners of Barlow, Rex and his wife, for their kind generosity, as he always makes us feel welcome.

The young members from the club always ask to go back to Barlow

All of SAC members were smartly dressed wearing their new tracksuits sponsored by John Hardy of Kingfisher Lighting, T-shirts kindly donated by Andy @ G S Print and caps donated to the club by Shirebrook Carter Lane Club. SAC would like to thank its sponsor Robin Clarke from Tackle Shak at Clipstone, and we would like to thank Daylite Baits at Rotherham for the donation of the green weed ground bait.
