| Small roach are quite easy to catch with float fished maggots and are present in most venues. But when they get over 1lb they become wise, and are much trickier to catch. Cloudy, windy days are best as big roach don’t like bright light. | The upper reaches of rivers are a good bet. Look for deeper glides and rows of sedges. The great thing about fishing venues like this is all the wildlife cavorting around you. |

| Float fished bread flake is a classic big roach bait. Just fold the bread around the hook shank. Set the float so the bait is just off the bottom and trundle it through the swim. If the float buries, strike! It could be a chub, but let’s hope it’s a roach. | A bar of silver and my favorite fish. Any roach over 1lb is a beauty. |
