A Sturgeon from St. Ives...
One
of our regular readers - Graeme Armes sent us this magnificent picture
from the 1920's.
We haven't got a lot of information but apparently the fish was shot
with a 12-bore shotgun at St. Ives sluice gates in 1924.
St. Ives sluice is approximately 4 miles from Earith where the river
goes tidal.
The young boy sitting at the front is Arthur Wallis who died this
year in his nineties. Arthur played a part in the St. Ives Angling
Club and also taught Graeme to pike fish some 30 years ago.
What a tremendous piece of angling history - which inspires a lot
of questions...
Who were all the people?
Will sturgeon ever visit St. Ives again - (sturgeon have been reported
recently in the River Thames)
What happened to the fish?
We'll probably never know the answers - but the photograph brings
a small insight into angling's historic and colourful past.
Our grateful thanks to Graeme for kindly sharing this piece of history
with us.
