WE are over the moon that a young angler was recognised at last Friday’s
Bassetlaw Sports Awards.
The young sports person of the year has finally gone to someone from the
world of angling with Devon Whitworth winning the Under 14s girls category.
The award was presented by Garry Fisher of Transform Schools Bassetlaw and
Claire O’Hara the European freestyle kayak champion.
Devon has competed for the last four years in the essentially male dominated
sport of angling at local, regional and national level.
She was the winner of Worksop DAA Triathlon competition in the under 12s
category in 2005/2006 and has also finished in the top six individually
in her age group in the NFA Nationals as part of the high-performing WDAA
cadet squad.
She was made the squad captain at the NFA national championships on the
Bridgewater Canal at Warrington where she led the team to a bronze medal,
and in the process was an individual section winner.
We all agree that she is seen as an excellent role model to youngsters of
both genders and is showing promise as a coach. Thanks go to her grandparents
Garry and Doreen Butt for their help and support over the years and everyone
involved with the Worksop junior angling section.
Last Sunday saw the second round of the Worksop DAA/Gateford Angling
Supplies Winter League taking place at Sandhill Lakes in bright and breezy
conditions and with the fish a little more spread out than on the previous
match.
The main basin proved to be the place to draw with Phil Turner weighing
a winning net of 14lb 4oz of skimmers off peg 52 using pole fished blood
worm and joker at 14 and a half meters.
Paul Ashley was second, employing groundbait feeder for a weight of 10lb
12oz of mostly skimmers from peg 32 and making up the frame was Johhny
Johnson from peg 64 with 10lb 5oz.
Mark Pressley and Andrew Pickerskill are tied for the league leadership
with eight points, in second Andy Lakey and Matt Godfrey have 11, and
Paul Ashley and Danny Harding are third.
Sherwood Forest Farm Park are running a spring pairs league with the top
prize being a week’s holiday at White Acres Fishery the details.
It starts Sunday 25th March, running for 10 matches, with the best seven
matches counting on section points. Pairs entry fee is £50 per pair,
£20 pegging and pools on the day. If you fish the first seven matches
the remaining three will be free. To reserve a place contact Mick or Brian
on 07721 316334.

Bill’s form tips for the field and signal ponds is to fish pellet
or maggot on the deck at six metres, corn is selecting the odd better
fish but the ground bait feeder is also worth a lookout. On Long Island,
quality carp are showing early in the day and late on the pole line between
eight and 10 metres with pellet and corn being Bill’s preferential
hookbaits.
SHERWOOD FOREST FP GUIDE
A COUPLE of mild days and the fishery is again on top form with 30lb of
skimmers being the norm on the Sherwood Lake.
Arnie Payling fished in gale force winds and heavy rain on peg 18 fishing
pole and 4mm pellet at 7m. He had over 35lb in a four-hour session made
up of skimmers (2lb). Rob Ward went one better on peg 26, alternating
between the bomb cast to the aerator and the pole fished to the weed bed,
he had a mixed net of skimmers and carp all on sweet corn that weighed
49lb 10oz.
Craig Brazier won the Tuesday rover match on peg 26 on the Holmedale Lake
with over 30 carp (5lb for a total of 74lb 5oz) fishing a small pellet
feeder and two red maggots on the hook cast to the old lily beds. Pleasure
anglers are also enjoying some great sport with carp being landed (9lb
corn and pellet being the best baits) and fishing from mid-morning onwards,
pegs around the island and one to five down the bottom have been the best.
The Langdale is fishing the best it’s fished for a long time, pole
fished maggot to a feature (best pegs one, two, three, 19, 22, 24, 26,
27, 29) feeding six maggots every put in for chub (3lb and carp and Ide)
2lb regular pleasure nets in excess of 30lb.
The Cavendish has been more sheltered from the winds and continues to
produce lots of skimmers on the pole and pellet, even on the coldest days
20lb is still on the cards from pegs one to 16.
Pegs one to seven are the best on the Maunside, pole fished maggot and
pellet to the far shelf for Chub and Orfe (2lb and the odd carp to 5lb).
