Life's a beach for local anglers at Bridlington

SATURDAY saw the inaugural Guardian beach match with the top prize of a meal for two at Pickwicks restaurant, which ironically enough is renowned for its large range of seafood.
The match, held in Bridlington on a rover basis, saw the Dinnington crew furthest north, fishing the north beach at Hornsea – and the Carlton contingent fishing the furthest south on Spurn Road. Between these were rods from Worksop, Shireoaks, Rhodesia and Treeton.
The day itself saw a placid sea but otherwise conditions appeared perfect, however the prolific pre-Christmas shoals failed to appear with only occasional bites, many of which were missed with occasional drifts of weed, making life a misery.
It was this weed that caused the hard-luck story of the day when Robert Stocks played an impressive cod to the surf line only to have his leader knot snag in the top ring. Being unable to reel, he tried to walk the fish back up the surf line only to see it flip off the hook and away.
This would have been just another fishing tale except it was witnessed by other anglers, including John Hunt of Rhodesia, who were powerless to help as it was out of wading distance due to the steep incline of the beach.
The only other cod that was caught fell to Kevin Roscoe of Langold who unfortunately missed the weigh-in by a matter of 15 minutes, which left only two solitary whiting from Colin Roscoe of Treeton and the aforementioned Hunt who tied for first place with Colin generously gifting the meal for two at Pickwicks to John.
Despite the lack of fish, the day was a resounding success with the majority of the anglers having a social get-together in The Crown and Anchor where they were made to feel exceptionally welcome.
Due to popular demand we will be running another match on 17th February but this time on a limited rover basis from Aldbrugh to Spurn as the consensus of opinion was that one of the best parts of the day was the instant camaraderie between the anglers from all throughout the Guardian area. The match mimics the conditions for the Bridlington Open a fortnight later with the tides being exactly the same time and height. For further information and registration give Roger a ring on the above number.
This Sunday sees the second round of the Worksop and District AA/Gateford Angling Supplies Pairs Winter League take place on Sandhill Lakes. The draw is held at the Snak Attack café on Gateford Road at 8.30am,where breakfasts will be available from 7am. The match commence sat 10.30am with the weigh in at 3.30pm.
News of some good days fishing are reaching us from the Grafton AA sections of the Chesterfield canal where part-time bailiff Walt Elgie has been taking mixed nets up to 40lb using the waggler on various pegs from Rhodesia through to the Tigers Den.
His catches have included dog chub, proper slab bream and even the odd winter tench during his afternoon sessions. At the other end of the spectrum, tackle dealer Ian Rowney of Warsop has been bagging good nets of roach on blood worm and joker on the Garside Street length of the cut during the cold snap, just before the festive season.
Richard Brunt, booking secretary of Worksop AA, has made booking even easier by creating an email address so clubs can book their matches online. The address is rbrunt.wdaa@sky.com

RIVERSIDE ROUND-UP
THE match weights at the Scrooby venue are still impressive despite the inclement weather.
Tuesday’s open match on the main lake, the results: 1st Geoff Bennett 40lb peg 10 maggot feeder cast to the rope; 2nd Phil Morgan 29lb 1oz peg 38 pole and pellet.
Friday’s match also took place on the main lake: 1st Mick Hall 45lb 5oz peg 36 pole fished pellet; 2nd Geoff Bennett 36lb 2oz peg six feeder.
John’s top form tip for pleasure anglers is to fish the Sandmartins Lake if the wind is having a good blow because of its sheltered location where pole fished pellet or maggot is still accounting for plenty of the new stock fish.
The strip lake is also responding to pole fished pellet with a bomb or feeder cast over to the far bank, which is also worth a try.
