Juniors raise money for Worksop anglers

CONGRATULATIONS to the youngsters representing the junior and cadet sections of the Worksop and District Angling Association for their sterling efforts in raising funds during another bag-packing session at the ASDA superstore at Retford.
The girls and boys, through hard graft and kind donations from shoppers, managed to collect an impressive £883 to help with the cost of running a club.
The money raised goes towards coaching sessions of novice anglers, competitions and matches as well as helping towards the cost of keeping the junior and cadet squads at the very pinnacle in the various national events they fish each year.
The junior education officer Garry Butt, together with the junior coach Glenn Foulds and cadet coach Doreen Butt, would like to thank all the staff at ASDA, in particular Jo Thorpe for their help on the day, sponsors Dave Hooton of DTH Engineering and all three of the town's tackle dealers for their support during the last year.
Any youngsters interested in taking up this marvelous sport of ours can join the country's premier junior angling club by phoning Garry or Doreen on 01909 770546, whether they are complete novices or experienced all are welcome.
Some of you may have heard that the Retford and District AA has shut up shop and ceased to exist. This is a sad note for local angling when an old and distinguished association cuts its losses.
We understand that club stalwart and secretary Harold Wells has had to retire after 15 years in the position and there isn't anyone prepared to step into the breach. All the leases for the waters that were under the association's control are now available and anyone interested can ring Harold on 01777 702227 for further details.
The five-day forecast for tomorrow's beach match is fairly favourable, but if it does swing around to an easterly direction, force six or more, ring Roger for details. To upheld conservation, minimum size limits are cod and bass 16 inch, whiting 14 inch and all flat fish 12 inch.

CLUB RESULTS

RIVERSIDE ROUND-UP
THE Boxing Day open match which took place on the main lake was a tight affair with only silver fish gracing the nets of the participating anglers. 1st Ian Temple 19lb 2oz peg 36 pole fished pellet; 2nd Les Richmond 18lb 4oz peg eight pole fished pellet; 3rd Norman Footit 17lb 9oz peg six pole fished pellet.

LAKESIDE ROUND-UP
THE fourth round of Linda's Lakeside Winter League took place on Saturday 23rd December when Steve had to utilise the boat for ice-breaking purposes before the match could begin.
But the lake fished surprisingly well despite the harsh conditions. 1st Shaun Wright 25lb 13oz peg 38 mixed net on pole fished maggot; 2nd Mick Shaw 20lb 1oz peg 29A silver fish on pole fished caster; 3rd Ben Holmes 18lb 11oz peg 29 silver fish on pole fished caster.
There was an open match fished on New Year's Eve fished in wet and windy conditions. 1st Steve Lowther 54lb 4oz peg 31 mixed net on pole fished pellet; 2nd Garry Brooks 31lb 8oz peg 30; 3rd Dave Lawton 26lb 6oz peg 12. Pleasure anglers on the two strip ponds are taking good nets of goldfish, skimmers, roach and small carp to 50lb using pole fished pellet or maggot, worm and caster.
Over on the trout lake Mick Adams landed an impressive rainbow of 9lb 7oz on pink fritz in his catch, with Mick Bennett landing 12 fish on cats whiskers and intermediate line.

LODGE FARM ROUND-UP
LAST Sunday saw the final round of the Gateford Angling Supplies Winter League took place on the Lily Pond at the Scrooby top venue.
In a tightly fished contest seven competitors went in to the match with a chance of winning the series. 1st Gavin Leversidge 24lb 15oz peg 71 maggot feeder; 2nd Barry Godley 21lb 4oz peg 50 maggot feeder; 3rd Richard Hardy 21lb 2oz peg 53 maggot feeder.
The final league standing saw Richard Hardy take the honours with a maximum 30 points with Ivor Jones claiming the runners up position and Gavin Leversidge in third place. Sponsor Geoff Mawby would like to thank everyone who took part and the Lodge Farm team for their hospitality.
Also on Sunday, the latest round of the Lodge Farm Winter League on the top pond took place in windy conditions, when the weights of small fish were respectable. 1st Adam Wake peg 43 19lb 1oz silver fish taken on maggot hook bait on groundbait feeder; 2nd Paul Martin peg 40 16lb 15oz pole and maggot for silver fish; 3rd Chris Byegrass peg 13 10lb 6oz pole fished maggot for silvers.
On Saturday on the Lily Pond, venue regulars Vale AC held a match. 1st Phil Cooper 43lb 4oz peg 51 pole fished maggot; 2nd John Clark 41lb 4oz peg 49; 3rd John Mconnologue 39lb 14oz peg 54.
On Thursday 28th, members of Hodthorpe WMC held a match on the Field Pond where Alan Hadfield led the way with 26lb 7oz from peg 25.
Bill tells us that the two new ponds (Field and Signal) are responding to pole fished maggot and pellet if the conditions allow, but if you have got a spare peg opposite you, a ground bait feeder with maggot hook bait thrown over just short of the far bank is accounting for good pleasure nets. He also informs us that the Lily Pond end of the Field is the favoured place with the middle pegs being the most productive on the Signal Pond.

SHERWOOD FOREST FORM GUIDE
PEG 31 on the Holmedale Lake is probably the only peg in Nottinghamshire where in the depths of winter you can guarantee catching carp, pole fished at 12m at the side of the sunken building and at 14m into the deep hole.
Feed pellets at 12m but nothing at 14m (because the fish live there) and fish corn, pellet and maggot on the hook. Local angler Mick French has had two short sessions on the peg having 11 carp - 8lb on the first and 15 to the same size on his second.
Pegs 23 to 27 and 32, 33, and 34 have produced lots of carp on the straight lead with corn and meat cast to the lily beds. On the Langdale, pole fished maggot and corn fished tight, up to a feature or the far bank for small carp, ide and chub to 2lb. Pegs one, two and three are worth trying, as is peg 26.
The Sherwood Lake is now back on top, even on the coldest days. Double figure weights are achievable on maggot, pinkie, worm and bread punch but you must feed very little and often.
Alan Hardy fished waggler and single maggot at peg 22 with 1lb bottom and a 22 hook feeding just four maggots every cast. He had a fish every cast, ending with over 25lb of roach, skimmers and perch - 8oz. Pegs 10 to 32 on the field side have been sheltered from the recent winds but don't forget that at pegs 40 to 48 on the deeper road side, pole fished worm has accounted for some good bream nets with fish going 4lb-plus.
Pegs one to seven have been the best on the Maunside for a long time, pole fished turmeric, dusted bronze maggots for the chub - 2lb fished up the far shelf and carp, 4lb on sweetcorn over pellets at the bottom of the far shelf nets - 50lb still being caught. Pegs Eight to 20 are still worth a try, chopped worm pole fished down the middle at 7m has produced nets of orfe and chub to 30lb.
The usual bream nets on the Cavendish have been a bit scarce of late but the roach have moved in. Pole fished caster has produced some good nets up to 30+lb of fish just nudging the pound mark, fish the pole at seven or eight milimetres and feed six casters every minute and the fish will soon move up in the water. The shallower you fish the bigger the fish seem to get. Bread punch is a great alternative, as is a small ground bait feeder and meat cast to the far bank for bigger skimmers.
The fishery has a paddle aeration system that in the worst conditions will keep the lakes ice free for fishing, over the winter months and they are open 8am-4pm, day tickets £5 adults, £3 juniors.

DAIWA HALLCROFT ROUND-UP
THE Retford venue has produced some impressive weight over the festive season with pole and pellet being the top method with Ian Littlewood employing this method to take a winning weight of 56lb 6oz on the moat pool.
Jamie Masson employed the same method to win the open match held on the Moat on the 27th with 27lb 7oz. Other winning method is the ground bait feeder as used on Friday's open on the Moat by L. Hewison for a net of 37lb with carp to 6lb.
