Nottingham News

ONE of the many benefits of writing this column is that we regularly get invited to presentation evenings and one of our favourites has always been the Triathlon which is held every year at the Innings.
However, it was with mixed emotions that we attended last Thursday's annual event as it could possibly be the last one ever due to falling attendance levels despite generous sponsorship from local businesses and individuals.
A great deal of time and effort has been put in to this event since its inauguration 13 years ago by Glyn Williams and has helped to improve angling skills among the youngsters in the Worksop area with five of them going on to represent England at junior international level, these being Colin Webster who won team bronze, Mark Foy, Andy Pickersgill who also won a team bronze, Terry Foulds and finally last year's individual junior world champion Matt Godfrey who also won a team gold last year in Croatia and captained the England junior team to team bronze medal.
Special thanks on the night must go to the main sponsor Ken Ward and his wife Christine for coming up with an amazing array of prizes. Over the years it has been estimated that Ken Ward's Sports has donated more than a phenomenal £100,000 in sponsorship to Worksop and District AA and other junior events.
Thanks must also go to other popular tackle retailer Geoff Mawby of Gateford Angling for also donating many prizes to the event, Worksop and District AA, Grafton AA for their kind donation of the waters, Kev Young of Bassetlaw Trophies who donated 33 trophies, and Steve and the staff at the Innings for the hospitality and buffet.
Guests of honour were former world champion Tommy Pickering, Paul Baggley the NFA's chief executive and David Kent, secretary of the East Midlands division of the NFA, and the long standing super steward Tommy Preen who was presented with a roach pole to show appreciation for all his time and effort over the years.
The results of the series of three matches are in the Under 12s section. Devon Whitworth made it consecutive wins with a total of 39 points with Joel Potts the runner-up with 36 points and Reece Nicholson following in his brother's footsteps by taking the Under 16s title with 40 points, three points ahead of Thomas Brunt in second. Aggregate weight was won by Tommy Davenport in the Under 16s with 17lb 2oz and Devon Whitworth defending her Under 12s aggregate trophy with 15lb 2oz.
Tommy Pickering thoroughly enjoyed the evening and commented that it is no wonder that Worksop and District AA continues to produce such a high calibre of anglers when they have the opportunity to serve their apprenticeship under the influence of such a supporting team of individuals.
On a bright note Garry Butt is looking at possible alternatives to the current format to enable this series to continue. If any one has any ideas we will forward them on.

RIVERSIDE ROUND-UP
THE Scrooby venue is still fishing well despite the onset of autumn with 71lb 7oz required to win Friday's open on the main match lake, Geoff Bennet put this impressive winning net on the scales by fishing pellet on the deck using the long pole from peg 34. Sixteen anglers weighed over 580lb between them on this match which averaged over 36lb per rod.
Tuesday's open on the match lake was a tight affair with Ian Temple weighing a level 66lb, employing the long pole with a pellet hook bait on peg 41; 2nd Reg Turner 63lb 5oz peg six.
John's form guide for the other two lakes is to fish the long pole and pellet on the deck again on the Sandmartins where catches have exceeded 80lb with his top tip for the strip pond being to cast a bomb or small feeder to the far bank for the better specimens or to fish the pole for the smaller fish.

THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE
AUTUMN has finally arrived along the Holderness coast with the mackerel shoals scattering and the first whiting of the season showing off the beaches and Bridlington North pier.
What is even more promising is that the fish are all of a good stamp and we have had reports from trawler skippers that there are good shoals of cod just off shore. If there is a decent easterly blow these will move in to casting range and may provide the sport that we were used to.
We are intending to do a series highlighting all clubs in the Guardian catchment area and we would appreciate you sending us anything you have for us to feature.
