WORKSOP AA’s junior defending world champion Matt Godfrey made his defence last Friday and Saturday in Portugal.
On the Friday, Godfrey managed second in his section with a fourth place in his section on Saturday, to claim 13th place individually. But he captained the England team to a bronze medal in the team’s defence of the Under 16s title.
Well done to Matt who is backed by Worksop Angling supplies from us all at the Guardian and Worksop and District AA.
Last Saturday saw the Worksop and District AA host the Holme Church Charity match on the Holme Marsh length of the River Trent.
One hundred pound was raised towards the upkeep of the Holme village focal point. Despite the river carrying more than two feet of extra water, the anglers taking part had a very enjoyable day fishing, even though there were no 100lb carp nets as taken on commercial pools.
Three double figure roach nets were testament to the firm belief that the Trent is finally on the mend. Pete Salt took the honours with 15lb 13oz running a stick float through with a maggot hook bait over hemp and caster loose feed on peg 119, with Lee Morley using the same tactics to claim runner-up spot with 12lb 4oz off peg 115 and Phil Turner using the pole on peg 101 for 10lb 6oz making up the frame.

THERE are two matches to report on from the members of the North Anston WMC.

Steve Pogson took the Saturday Aggregate Shield in the last match of the series. The series consisted of a programme of eight matches fishing commercials and canals. The secretary would like to thank all members for their support.
Stanley Street, 17th September at Sandhill Lake (pegs 51-80). 1st James Kirkham 7lb 07oz peg 58 waggler maggot/caster skimmer bream; 2nd Andy Royle 5lb 07oz pole maggot/caster peg 77 skimmer/bream; 3rd Mick Pogson 4lb 06 peg 76 pole/worm/caster skimmer bream.
Although the weights were down from the previous day, a lot of fish were hooked and lost (mainly eels). The match was fished in bright sunny conditions.
Junior Section. 1st Sam Kisby 3lb 13oz peg 62 pole/caster/maggot skimmer bream; 2nd Ryan Boulton 14oz peg 60.

McAuslin had a mixed bag including two carp over 2lbs each, the rest of the catch were perch. All caught on castor and chopped worm.

LAKESIDE ROUND-UP
THE best match weights of the week at the Ranskill venue were Wickersley AC’s event last Sunday. 1st Len Green 126lb 11oz peg four carp on dog biscuit; 2nd Carlos Sweatski 101lb 8oz peg 28; 3rd Richard Ward 61lb 12oz peg five. All the top seven had more than 60lb.
Over on the strip ponds, Michael Campbell netted more than 120lb of carp and skimmers in a pleasure session on the first peg of the second strip, using pole fished caster or luncheon meat.
On the trout lake, Maltby’s Colin Wilson banked 14 fish to 9lb 10oz employing a white damsel on a floating line with fellow trout angler Sam Jackson of Whitwell having a best fish of 6lb 5oz in his 12-fish haul, this time on segmented bloodworm/various buzzers and floating line.
On the carp lake, Mark Wilkinson banked himself 12 fish, the best a common of 24lb 10oz on whisky flavoured boilies off peg four.

RIVERSIDE ROUND-UP
THE best match weight off the Sandmartins Lake during the last week was Geoff Bennett’s 46lb off peg three employing pole fished pellet last Tuesday, with the main match lake still responding to shallow fished meat where venue expert Les Richmond topped the field in Saturday’s open with 69lb 8oz off peg 34.
The regular Wednesday Comrades AC of Bircotes match was held on Sandmartins where Les Richmond weighed in 41lb 6oz off peg 18 using meat fished shallow; 2nd Paul Brazier 34lb 1oz.

SHERWOOD FOREST FARM PARK
THE Holmedale Lake continues its good form for carp weighing 10lb and for match weights up to 90lb and pleasure catches in excess of 100lb.
Nottingham’s Jeff Newton again had a good day fishing waggler and prawn over loose fed hemp. He had 21 carp between 4lb and 9lb from peg 33. A small method feeder cast to the islands and lily pads with hair rigged corn is producing lots of fish as is pole/pellet and paste fished at 6m and down the margin, all pegs are worth a try.
On the Sherwood Lake, peg 42 on the road side is still on top form. Fred Bishamp added 13lb to the lake match record he held by weighing in 117lb 8oz made up of seven skimmers (2lb and 17 carp to 12lb) caught on popped up bread fished between a foot off the bottom to just under the surface.
On the Cavendish, its still a skimmer bream every put-in on pole corn and pellet, they are coming well off the bottom and you can sometimes catch them one foot deep. Caster is sorting out some nice Autumn roach with some going well over the pound mark.

DAIWA HALLCROFT ROUND-UP
LAST Wednesday saw Andy Oldham on the moat outer where he smashed the lake and venue record, but only just scraped the win as there were two other anglers who achieved the same amazing feat. Andy, drawn on peg 12 of Moat outer, fished pellet and meat at 12m on the deck and shallow for a total of 42 carp and an astonishing 194lb 14oz.
Not only did Malcolm Edgecombe achieve his first ever ton, he too broke the venue record with a weight of 188lb 12oz but unfortunately had to settle for second. Mal opted to fish pole at 7m with corn and pellet for 37 carp up to 11lb. 3rd G. Bennett, Peg One BCUK, 175lb 6oz peg outer eightfishing pellet and meat for 40 carp.

LODGE FARM ROUND-UP
JENKINS AC of Retford were on the top pond on Sunday. 1st Daz Godley 43lb 9oz peg 35 skimmers and tench taken on pole fished corn and meat; 2nd Aidy Hallwood 23lb 12oz peg 44; 3rd Ben Taylor 16lb 4oz peg 46.
Bill says when pleasure fishing the Lily or Long Island ponds, try paste down the edge where carp to 17lb have been gracing the nets of venue regulars. Also maggot and pellet shallow are accounting for nets of chub and carp on these two lakes. The fish are responding at different depths on the two new ponds depending on the conditions on the day (or overnight) but maggot is becoming a little more prominent over loose fed pellet.

THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE
THE Holderness coast is producing catches reminiscent of the glory days of the late 70s with pier and shore anglers taking good catches of mackerel on all baits and lures and boat anglers are struggling to get through the massed shoals to reach the cod and ling. When they do they are catching fish to double figures on both bait and jiggers.
A swordfish has been caught off the Northumberland coast in a trawl net over 2,000 miles away from the Mediterranean.
The Association’s lengths of the Trent at Holme Marsh, the canal past Retford and Sandhill Lake, are fishing well at the moment but for pleasure and specimen anglers the best has got to be Normanton on the Tidal stretch where bags of Barbel and Bream are being taken in to more than 80lb.

A TEAM of anglers from Portland School netted the top prize in the country as Worksop schools dominated the national championships.
Teams from Portland and Valley School finished in three of the top four places in the National Angling Championships at the Glebe Complex in Leicestershire last Thursday.
The Portland Red team won the event thanks to an outstanding team effort which consisted of four section wins from Jason Goulding, Nile Lilley, Luke Pickering and Thomas Hunt.
Hunt, who has only been angling for 18 months, won an individual silver medal in the Under 16s category with a net of 62lb 10oz.
The Portland Blue team claimed the bronze medal and the two eight-man teams combined put a total of 434lb on the scales.
Portland coach Glyn Williams said: “It’s an absolutely brilliant achievement.”
“When you consider Heartland and Portland School merged 18 months ago, angling has since played a very important role in the extra-curricular activities.”
Valley School also deserve praise after a fourth-place finish in the team event.
The Under 14s age section was dominated by local anglers with Ryan Bolton of Valley claiming first place with 38lb 10oz, Reece Nicholson also of Valley clinched second and Portland’s Ricky Sambells took the bronze.
Never in the long history of this event has a set of anglers from one town made such an impact.
Other Portland competitors in the two teams were Drew Raynor, Tommy Davenport, Kyle Moore, Jake Craven, Robert Stocks, Nathan Bierton, Nathan Parry, Josh Hurst, Troy Watkinson, Nathan Price and Chris Gibson.
The school would like to thank Mr Williams and Jane and Ian Pickersgill for their help and donation of the bait.
