
Packed summer is in
store for Juniors
The summer season is set to get fully under way in the next couple of
weeks and with it will come a packed schedule for junior anglers.
There are a number of competitions for the younger readers of our column
over the summer starting on Friday 23rd June with the British Waterways/Grafton
AA commemorative match on the John Shaw’s section of the canal.
This event will consist of two age groups, 10 to 12 year-olds and 13
to 16 year-olds with the draw at 5pm and fishing from 6pm to 9pm.
There will be prizes for all participants and tickets are available
from Ken Ward Sports on Carlton Road for £2 all in.
July sees the start of the Triathlon Series which is open to Junior
Worksop book holders with the matches taking place on Saturday 15th
July on Sandhills Lake, Saturday 5th August on the John Shaw’s
length of the canal and the final match will again be on Sandhills on
Saturday 23rd September.
July sees the Inter-Schools match, as mentioned in last week’s
column, take place on Thursday 20th at Hallcroft.
Currently seven teams have committed to this competition and entry to
this event will be closed at the end of May. So if your school has not
already signed up, we urge you to do so.
On Friday August 11th there will be an evening match fished from 6pm
until 8pm for Worksop book holders, again with two age groups.
The first group is nine to 11 years and the second 12 to under 16s.
Entry is only £1 and tickets are available from Ken Ward Sports.
Also on the calendar is the NJAA Knock-out finals at Hampton springs
on Saturday 10th June and the NFA Junior Nationals held on Saturday
8th July on the Bridgewater Canal at Warrington.
Please note the Worksop book not only allows entry to matches but also
proves excellent value at just £5 allowing free fishing on Worksop
AA controlled waters. They will be available from all local tackle shops
at the beginning of June.
Club Results
The Worksop Disabled Anglers fished at Wetlands on Tuesday 9th May where
the in form Mick Drage had a comfortable win off peg 12 with a level
32lb.
He beat Stuart Brumpton into second place with 21lb 4oz from peg 30
and Keith Walters made up the frame with 20lb 14oz off peg 16.
In the first of two matches in the Go Bait Spring League at Langold
Lake, venue expert Mark Woodcock secured a win fishing the ground bait
feeder with a worm and caster hook bait at peg 5 to put six bream on
the scales for 25lb 5oz.
Paul Unwin claimed the runners-up position on the next peg 6 with a
net of four bream and a tench weighing 22lb 4oz with Ian Turner in third
place weighing 19lb 1oz on peg 42.
In the second match Woodcock again took top spot with a bag of three
bream, two tench and four skimmers for a weight of 26lb 10oz off peg
6 employing the ground bait feeder, again with a worm caster and red
maggot hook bait edging out Ian Moore in to second place who weighed
17lb 11oz off peg 42.
The Worksop AA cadets and juniors held a sponsored fish on the High
School section of the Chesterfield Canal on Saturday where the youngster’s
dedication shone through yet again.
Antonia Wild had the best weight of the day with 4lb 14oz, which included
a personal best bream of 4lb 2oz. Ryan Williamson netted 3lb 13oz and
Devon Whitworth 3lb 2oz.
Worksop United held their first club match of the season on Laurel Lake
at Lindholme on Sunday, not the Bonsai due to a booking mix up.
Pete Nunn ran out the winner with 20lb 1oz just beating B. McGowan in
to second place, who weighed 19lb 4oz, and T. Keyworth in third with
18lb 12oz in a tight finish.

Members of Dinnington Welfare AC were at Side Farm fisheries again on
Sunday where Andy Simpson won with 15lb 4oz on peg 1 pole fished pellet.
Second place went to Roy Waring on peg 7 with 9lb 3oz employing pole
fished pellet or maggot with Mick Waring in third place using the same
tactics on peg 10 to put 8lb 8oz in the net.
Lakeside round-up
Kevin Miree’s 55lb 8oz of chub, ide and skimmers off peg 12 was
the best weight of the week in Saturday’s Bramley WMC match.
He used pole fished meat to just edge Mal Thompson in to second place
with 52lb 12oz off peg 26.
Pleasure angler Phil Booth landed over 120lb of carp and silvers on
peg 4 on the first strip using pole fished pellet and sweetcorn.
On the Carp Lake Martin Walsgrove landed nine fish, the best a ghostie
of 28lb 12oz using Frank Warren pop up.
Garry Bywater and Jamie Price caught 15 carp between them on boilies,
the heaviest a common of 21lb 4oz.
Over on the Trout Lake, fluff chucker Paul Martin banked 19 fish and
a personal best rainbow of 13lb 8oz using cats whisker on intermediate
line.
While Worksop angler Mark Parker netted 16 rainbows to 8lb on black
and red buzzers and floating line.
riverside round-up
The top match of the week was Friday’s event which Les Richmond
won with a weight of 66lb 6oz on peg 36 pole fishing meat shallow.
He edged out Ted Ford on peg 38 with 47lb 7oz taken on pellet fished
in the margins.
The Comrades Club of Bircotes were on the strip pond last Wednesday
where John Siddons was the top rod with 38lb 6oz using the bomb on peg
1. Les Richmond claimed the runners-up position with 29lb 13oz using
the same method on peg 3.
Diawa Hallcroft round-up
The Retford venue is on fire at the moment with 100lb plus weights a
common occurrence.
Pole fished pellet and meat at varying depths is the most consistent
method at the moment with Lee Hewison putting 138lb 8oz on the scales
to win on Saturday 6th of May’s match on the Moat pool.
The following day Steve Sheppard won with 77lb 14oz of carp using pole
fished paste on peg 45 on the Moat Pool.
Some of the larger carp are also beginning to show later on in the matches
or pleasure sessions in the margins, but be prepared with strong tackle
as many exceed the 10lb mark.
Sherwood round-up
The Holmedale Lake is the best place to be at the moment and the match
record has just been smashed by Pete Hodgetts From Mansfield Woodhouse.
He fished pole and biscuit on the surface at peg 38 to weigh in a massive
194lb catch of over 40 carp to 10lb.
Pleasure anglers are enjoying top quality sport as all pegs are producing
20 to 30 carp to 10lb fishing pole at 11m out and down the margins or
a feeder cast to the lilies or the islands. Corn pellet and luncheon
meat on the hook, as well as dog biscuits and bread are the main methods.
The four other lakes are in top form with lots of double figure carp
from the Sherwood Lake as well as good bags of skimmers and tench to
2lb in nets to over 60lb.
On the Maunside it is a fish every put in using pole and caster or pellet
towards the far bank. Loose feed every put in and your float will not
stop going under, expect carp to 3lb, chub to 1lb as well as orfe and
barbel.
Cavendish is always on form for roach to 1.5lb on pole and caster and
skimmers to 2lb on pellet. Lots of chub and Ide from the Langdale on
pole chop worm and caster.
lodge farm round-up
Anston WMC visited Field Pond on Sunday where Ray Short ran out the
winner on peg 34 fishing pole and pellet with 39lb 4oz.
Neil Hall claimed second spot with 20lb on peg 8 and Paul Naylor was
third with 18lb 1oz off peg 1.
Bill informs us that Lily and Long Island are responding to the caster
fished shallow with match weights going to 83lb 8oz.
Pole fished pellet is the top method on Signal Pond with the Top Pond’s
tench showing a liking for corn or caster.

Glynn Kaye of Dinnington AC has informed us that the Royal Bank of Scotland
