Westwood
clocks up the carp
This week we start by reporting a Westwood in the news – but this
time it’s not Lee but his father John who has achieved an awesome
record by catching his 100th chub in excess of 5lb.
John fished the river Stour in Dorset this month on the Throop section
on a two-day session.
The first day was poor by his own admission but the second day was hectic
taking eight bream between 4 and 7lb and five chub.
This included three over the 5lb mark and a single barbel of over 7lb.
He employed a topper Hoskins float that needed a 7bb shoting capacity
and heavily loose fed hemp and maggot, four rod lengths out.
John could not believe he was the only angler on the bank and his only
company were a couple of foxes and a kingfisher.
The river belongs to Ringwood AA and is a day ticket water that is well
worth a look if you are planning an annual holiday in Bournemouth this
year. Well done John!
On a more local
front Alex Roebuck of Worksop AA informs us that the association’s
stretches on the Chesterfield Canal at Clayworth basin is fishing extremely
well.
This is especially for dog roach taken on pole fished hemp and tares
with smaller roach being taken on maggot and caster or hook bait.
At the other end of Clayworth, at Grays Bridge (Chequered Bridge), anglers
are taking nets of roach and bream with a maggot or caster hookbait
fished over ground bait.
Also, the High School length in Retford is fishing exceptionally well
for the few pleasure anglers that take the plunge.
For the specimen
angler large wild carp to 25lb are being caught at St Peter’s
Bridge, also in Clayworth, with many pleasure anglers being smashed
on their lighter gear.
Alex says that great things are expected of the canal in Wiseton after
the British Waters dredged it. So don’t just sit there, go and
experience it for yourself.

Lodge farm round-up
Manton AC fished the Top Pond last Saturday where they found the going
tough.
This did not deter Dave Wilson from putting a winning net of skimmers
and perch, weighing 4lb 9oz, on the scales using the maggot feeder on
peg 14. Andy Bell claimed second place with 2lb 8oz off peg 19.
Sunday saw the second round of the Gateford Angling Winter League where
Pete Scott took the honours with 26lb 1oz from peg 70.
Steve Royle claimed the runners up position with 12lb 12oz from peg
52 and Stuart Brumpton made up the frame with 11lb 14oz from peg 54.
All the top three used the wag and mag method.
The best match of the weekend was the Vale AC event on Long Island where
venue regular Dave Phantom landed a winning weight of 46lb 4oz from
peg 88.
Steve Smith netted 45lb 6oz off peg 92 for second and Gary Hazel weighed
38lb 3oz for third off peg 101.
Again all the top three used the mag and wag with the seventh placed
angler weighing a creditable 24lb.
Bill has advised for clubs fishing their super club matches on the Top
Pond to use regular loose feed lightly, fishing on the deck, but watch
out for the fish moving up off the bottom.
