AA plan to run mini-series
News has reached us this week that Worksop AA are hoping to run a mini
series of six matches, starting in February, on Sundays on the High
School/Asda sections of the Chesterfield Canal.
Nothing is set in stone yet and the success of the series depends on
the levels of support but it is worth noting that there are no bait
bans and bloodworm and joker will be allowed.
And talking to local anglers who fish this length during the winter
months there are quality roach and bream to be had.
With no Worksop Winter League on the canal this year we hope this will
be well supported so watch this space for further details.
As you can see from the pictures the predator anglers have been making
the most of the cold snap on our local water.
Thank you to all who have sent in pictures and please continue to show
us your best catches.
Lakeside Round-Up
The Walkley Winter League visited the Ranskill venue last Saturday where
the Match Lake and the two strip ponds were in use for the 56 anglers.
The first strip proved the place to draw with the top three weights
coming from it.
On peg 4 Roy Nicholls fished wag and mag to put a carp and silverfish
bag on the scales weighing 59lb 8oz to take first place.
Pete Lewis was on peg 3 with 40lb 7oz for second place with Paul Todd
in third with 40lb 6oz from peg 5.
On Sunday the Woodseats Winter League took place where Dave Holbury
ran out the winner with a silverfish net of 14lb 1oz employing pole
fished maggot on peg 28.
Match organiser Mark Holmes claimed the runners up position with 11lb
8oz from peg 8 with Dave Catton third with 11lb 2oz from peg 16.
Pleasure catches on the Strip Pond are still impressing with Jim walker
landing an 80lb plus mixed bag of carp roach and skimmers on pole fished
sweetcorn on the second strip.
On the Carp Lake Shaun Parker landed three fish the best a common of
19lb 10oz off peg 3.
Over on the Trout Lake sport is still hectic with John Ellis netting
15 fish to 9lb 8oz on bloodworm, buzzers and floating line. Simon West
used cats whisker on intermediate line to land thirteen rainbows to
4lb.
Lodge farm round-up
The latest round of Mick and John’s Winter Series took place last
Sunday on Lily Pond where Dave Wright fished wag and mag on peg 53 to
take the honours with 59lb 12oz.
Ivor Jones claimed second position with 28lb 6oz employing pole fished
corn on peg 73 with Geoff Gibson claiming third place with 19lb 11oz
from peg 49 taken feeder with maggot hookbait.
All the regulars of this series would like to wish Mick Simpson all
the best in his recovery from his recent illness and look forward to
seeing him on the bank.
On Sunday Mick Peddle of Hodthorpe WMC fished the Field Pond on a pleasure
session where he netted 40lb plus of small carp using the wag and mag.
He started at full depth but with regular light loose feed managed to
bring the fish up shallow to a depth of four feet.
Bill’s top tip when fishing either Lily or Long Island is to fish
waggler shallow with a maggot hookbait with regular light feeding pattern
as close to central features as possible.
Sherwood round-up
The fish seem to have got used to the colder conditions with lots of
bites on the wagler, maggot and caster.
On the Cavendish Lake pole and 4mm pellet have been taking skimmers
up to a pound, nets to 35lb.
On the Maunside pegs 1, 2 and 3 have been first, second and third for
the last two winter league matches.
Peg 3 produced a winning net of 75lb 15oz of chub and small carp and
peg two was second with 47lb 14oz.
Pole and bronze maggot have been doing the damage fished to the far
bank and up in the water feeding every put in, but you only need a pint.
Waggler and maggot is the best method on the Sherwood Lake feeding six
every cast. Mixed nets of skimmers to 2lb, roach and rudd to 12oz, the
best net this week being just over 40lb.
Also taking fish is the pole and pinkie fished over a little black ground
bait, most pegs producing but 41-54 on the road side and 10-27 have
been the best.
In the Winter League on Cavendish and Maunside Lakes Stuart Brumpton
was the latest winner in round nine on Saturday.
Stuart pole fished to the far bank on the Maunside for fine net of chub
and carp to 1lb mark and a total of 47lb 14oz from peg 2.
Second was Steve Richards, peg 3, Maunside 40lb 7oz and third was Jason
Thomas, peg 1, Maunside 30lb 10oz.
After nine rounds Mick Langton and John Woodland lead the way with 21
points from Jason Thomas on 24 points.

Through the grapevine
As previously reported the Holderness coast is providing excellent sport
with cod and quality whiting showing in numbers.
Last Thursday Roger accompanied Rhodesia rods John Hunt and Phil Bradford
to Spurn but was not as successful as his companions.
This was due to blasting his bait into the horizon in search of the
elusive cod while John and Phil fished short to medium range to amass
an amazing bag of whiting - fishing lug worm tipped off with squid head.
You live and learn!
Cyril, a local pleasure angler and column reader, has asked us to enquire
if anyone has any information on who owns the lease on Winthorpe Lake
near Newark, since Newark and District Council gave up the angling rights
earlier this year.
Cyril and a friend enjoyed numerous sessions catching large bags of
bream on this venue if you have any information please contact Stuart
and Roger.
To round off this week’s column Whitwell rod Andy Lakey and his
partner Melanie would like to thank everyone for their best wishes and
concerns after his recent operation. Andy is on the mend and hopes to
put a few fish in his net in the new year.
