TWENTY-THREE youngsters from Worksop and District AA visited Aston Park Fishery on Saturday, where despite several being of a limited experience, nearly all managed to put a fair amount of fish in their nets.
Under the supervision of registered coaches Garry and Doreen Butt and the untiring efforts of the venue owner Alex Mitchell, who passed on his own vast knowledge of the pond and the tactics required, a good day was had by all.
Results, Under 12s: 1st Tom Allen 3lb 15oz; 2nd Elliot Marris 3lb 11oz; 3rd Micheal Tambourini 3lb 4oz. Over 12s: 1st Ben Frost 2lb 2oz; 1st Devon Whitwhorth 2lb 2oz; 3rd Joel Potts 1lb 15oz.
The first practice session of 2008 proved a roaring success with many thanks going to Alex and his team at the complex for their hospitality and help on the day.
Worksop and District Angling Association have been the most successful team nationally over the last decade with current junior world champion Matt Godfrey being a product of the youth policy employed by the association and on this note we would like to inform you that the cadets and juniors are looking for new recruits for both age groups aged between nine and 15. Experience is not required just an enthusiasm to partake.
With classroom sessions as well as practice sessions and plenty of activities planned for the coming months our top tip is to contact Garry and Doreen on 01909 770546 and join the best.
On a note for the senior matchmen in the area, Bill and the team over at Lodge Farm and local tackle dealer Geoff Mawby of Gateford Angling Supplies are getting together in April with charity co-ordinator Sally Richardson to run a match in aid of the Guardian nominated charity of the year Bassetlaw Breast Care to be fished on both field and signal ponds. We will cover it in full next week with all the relevant information.

CLUB RESULTS
THERE are two permit holders matches to report on from Worksop United with both being fished on their own waters on the Chesterfield Canal.
The first took place on Saturday 12th January: 1st G. Barlow 20lb 12oz peg 19; 2nd C. Barker 2lb 15oz peg 13; 3rd J. Bradford 2lb 3oz peg 12.
The second event was competed on the following Saturday: 1st R. Allen 12lb 5oz peg 19 maggot and worm; 2nd M. Drage 9lb 11oz peg 20 maggot; 3rd G. Barlow 7lb 11oz peg 32 maggot.
Club secretary Rob would like to remind members that the subs are now due and the cost stays unchanged from last year.

LAKESIDE ROUND-UP
SATURDAY saw the sixth round of Lynda’s winter league at the Ranskill venue fished in mild overcast conditions which saw a field of 37 anglers taking part: 1st Jeff Clarke 41lb 8oz peg 18 bomb fished meat; 2nd Nick Parsons 20lb 8oz peg 37 bomb fished meat on corn; 3rd Daz Godley 17lb 7oz peg 12 pole and pellet; 3rd Ray Clay 17lb 7oz peg 16 pole fished maggot.
Sunday saw Paul Campbell put a winning weight of 65lb 8oz on the scales to record a victory in the Woodseats winter league from in-form peg 37 using the top method, bomb fished meat and corn.
On the strip ponds, Garry Jackson pleasure fished his way to a 50lb+ bag of carp ide, tench and roach on pole and pinkie which included two roach.
Over on the trout lake, Pete Hamilton slipped his net under 15 fish to an impressive 9lb 11oz taken on cats whisker presented on an intermediate line with fellow game angler Tony Sneddon casting his black buzzer on a floating line to tempt 23 fish.

LODGE FARM ROUND-UP
FOR the next seven Sundays, Bill and the team over at the Scrooby Top venue will be running open matches on the field pond, with an entry fee of £12 all in.
The draw will take place at 9am with the fishing between 10am and 3pm. For more information ring Bill on 07815 030694.
On Tuesday, a group of anglers from Worksop travelling under the guise of ‘the likely lads’ held a knock-up on the lily pond with all the main frame employing waggler fished maggot: 1st Alan Hadfield 38lb 5oz peg 57; 2nd Pete Scott 24lb 3oz peg 51; 3rd Andy Hill peg 53 22lb 3oz.
On Wednesday it was the turn of regular visitors Gateford Angling Supplies to hold their weekly jaunt on the lily pond where local angling superstar Sean Storey, after a successful season specimin hunting, won his first match at the first attempt back on the match scene. Once again wag and mag was the method employed by all the main frame: 1st Sean Storey 30lb 1oz peg 49; 2nd Keith Morris 18lb 1oz peg 51; 3rd Mick Burrel 13lb 10oz peg 53.
Sunday saw the first of Bill’s open matches run on field pond: 1st Garry Morris 18lb peg two maggot feeder; 2nd Chris Eaves 10lb peg 11; 3rd Brian Crowder 9lb 2oz peg three.
Bill also tells us that pleasure anglers have been enjoying good sport on all the carp pools fishing pellet on the pole or the pellet waggler, especially on long island.

RIVERSIDE ROUND UP
PROPRIETOR John of the Scrooby complex tells us that the main lake’s resident carp have been showing a liking for the maggot feeder cast over to the posts marking the sunken island.
There is just one open match to report on from the fishery last week which took place on the main lake last Friday: 1st Les Richmond 32lb 3oz peg 12 long pole fished pellet or short pole fished worm; 2nd Ian Temple 18lb 4oz peg 22 pole fished maggot.

LITTLE JOHN FISHERIES
STEVE BEARD at the Ollerton venue inform us that the ground bait feeder cast over to either of the central islands or aerators on both lakes is accounting for match weights over 36lb.
Long pole fished pellet or maggot is also a tactic not to be ignored with corn used as an alternate hook bait also worth a try. The best match weight of the week was Richard Evans with 41lb 8oz fishing the long pole and maggot or a ground bait feeder and maggot in Sunday’s open off peg seven.

SHERWOOD FOREST FARM PARK
THERE is nothing guaranteed in angling, but pretty close is the famous bore hole (peg 31 on the Holmedale) producing a few bites even in the worse of conditions.
Found at 13 metres, the “hole” requires very little loose feed as this can quite often spook the fish, pole fished corn or soft pellet is the method of choice at the moment with match weights going over 80lb.
On sherwood lake, the top tip is to fish to any reed beds with pellet or corn to take mixed nets of carp, bream and tench in nets in excess of 50lb with wag and mag accounting for good pleasure nets.

TOFT NEWTON ROUND-UP
THE third and final weekend of coarse fishing has just ended with, yes, you’ve guessed it – no coarse fish being caught!
Two pike were reported to have followed lures but that’s as close it got, which is disappointing given the large head of good fish known to be in the reservoir. Plenty of trout were taken to 6lb. The trout season begins at 7.30am on Friday 1st February.
Stocking will commence in the week leading up to opening to ensure a good start.
