AS MOST of you are already aware, last Saturday saw the eagerly awaited Annual
Guardian invitation beach match.
On the morning things did not look promising with heavy breakers hitting the beach
and a fresh southerly wind.
However, competitors who had ventured up on the Friday for a practice session
had caught quality whiting and flatties so expectations were still high.
It was apparent that a few had not turned up due to illness and possibly the poor
forecast, but 14 hardy souls, including two juniors Steven Gilfillan and Michael
Fox, took to the beach with conditions continually worsening and by 1pm it was
blowing a constant force nine with hail and sleet.
It says a lot about the spirit of anglers generally that the competitors continued
to fish and we cannot commend enough the dedication of the two junior anglers
who stuck it out as long as any senior.
Eventually the match had to be abandoned with the seas throwing up ‘rogue’
waves that could sweep a body out to sea.
Although there was obvious disappointment everyone was keen for a rematch and
the event has been provisionally rescheduled for 29th December, subject to logistics
and availability of bait. Venue to be confirmed in next week’s column.
Any competitor who has not been reimbursed please contact Roger.
On a more upbeat note the cadets held their annual bag-packing fundraiser at ASDA
in Retford last Saturday, raising a very creditable £570.09 and coach Doreen
Butt would like to thank the volunteers who took part with their parents, the
staff for their kind hospitality and the shoppers who generously donated. These
funds will go a long way to supporting young anglers.
DAIWA HALLCROFT ROUND-UP
BLOOD worm and joker fished on the long pole is putting over 20lb of roach in
the silver fish matches on the moat pool at the Retford complex with the maggot
feeder putting plenty of bends in the rods of anglers.
The groundbait feeder is worth a throw with a dead maggot, meat to soft pellet
hook bait.
RIVERSIDE ROUND-UP
THE resident fish on all three lakes at the Scrooby complex have switched their
appetites from pellet over to maggot fished on the pole with the pegs around the
point producing the most consistent sport in match bags to 34lb 5oz.
John the proprietor informs us that the recently restocked strip pond is producing
plenty of bites for pleasure anglers with small carp around the 1lb mark gracing
their landing nets.
LODGE FARM ROUND-UP
LAST Tuesday Mick’s Maurauders made their weekly trip to the Scrooby Top
Fishery to tackle the Long Island: 1st Shane Moore 52lb 6oz peg 97 maggot feeder;
2nd Mick Burrell 50lb 4oz peg 95 pellet & meat; 3rd Ian Mellish 21lb 2oz peg
88 feeder fished meat.
On Sunday the latest round of the Gateford Angling Supplies/Hodthorpe WMC Winter
League took place on the lily pond: 1st Mick Burrell 61lb 4oz bomb and meat peg
63; 2nd Gavin Lever sidge 36lb 13oz peg 70 wag and mag; 3rd Ian Mellish 23lb 6oz
peg 60 wag and mag.
Also the results of the Welbeck Colliery AC latest club competion on the field
pond: 1st Mick Smith 29lb 14oz peg 14 mixed net pole and pellet; 2nd Daz Stayley
20lb 10oz peg 11 pole fished maggot; 3rd Wayne Jerrum 20lb 4oz peg two groundbait
and the maggot feeders.
TOFT NEWTON ROUND-UP
WEEKLY results: 35 rods caught 59 fish. Colder conditions and strong winds hampered
the fishing this week.
A couple of anglers managed six fish each, one using Diawl Bachs on a floater
and the other on boobies on a di-5.
Best area is along south bank from the boat ramp down to south east corner, with
late morning/early afternoon the best time. Season closes 16th December.
SHERWOOD ROUND-UP
The Holmedale pool is still producing plenty of action to several methods.
The straight lead with a corn or meat hookbait cast over to any features is worth
a look as well as wagglered meat and pellet with loose fed pellet catapulted over
the top.
The pellet or groundbait feeder is accounting for plenty of bites as is corn presented
on the short pole.
Despite the horrendous conditions last Saturday, maunside managed to produce decent
sport in the low numbers on pole-fished caster presented on the far bank, small
carp to 3lb being the obliging quarry in bags of over 40lb and poled maggot responsible
for match nets of 30lb plus of chub and barbell.
Cavendish lake has slowed with skimmer bream to 2lb showing a liking to soft pellet
on the pole.
LAKESIDE ROUND-UP
SATURDAY saw 35 brave anglers face five hours of torrential rain and blizzards
in the third round of the Ranskill venue’s Lynda’s Lakeside Winter
League: 1st Tony Britton 26lb peg 18 carp on bomb-fished corn & meat; 2nd
Mick Shaw 8lb 2oz peg 38 bits on pole and pinkie; 3rd Ian Symmonds 7lb 3oz peg
30 silvers on maggot feeder.
Also on the main lake Les Richmond pole-fished worm to bag a winning silver fish
weight of 23lb 14oz in Wednesday’s open match on peg three.
On the strip ponds the deeper water appears to give the fish more shelter from
the conditions and this was the case for Garry Waddington who took 50lb plus of
carp gold fish roach and skimmers on pinkie or sweetcorn presented on the pole
from peg three on the second strip pond.
On the carp pond, Neil Harrison landed two lumps off peg three, the largest a
mirror of 21lb 14oz.
Over on the trout lake, Tony Smith tempted 10 fish to 8lb 10oz on various buzzers
presented on a floating line with fellow fly caster Carl Mitcham netting 17 rainbows
to 3lb on dry flies.
LITTLE JOHN LAKES ROUND-UP
OLLERTON fishery is still producing summer match weights with Shane Florence the
man in form bagging over 88lb on soft pellet presented on the long pole over a
bed of the venue’s own feed pellet from Maid Marion on peg 25.
The same method is also producing the goods on Robin Hood with nets of small carp
going to 35lb 6oz and the pegs in the early 20s seem to be the most prominent.
Owner Steve runs open matches on Tuesdays (£15), Thursdays (£10) and
Saturdays (£15) with a £1 optional golden peg on each match. The draw
starts at 9am at the on-site cabin with fishing between 10am and 3pm.
