WE would like to start by offering our congratulations to the teams
from Dinnington Comprehensive and Portland School who came second and
third respectively in last week’s Shakespeare National Schools
Angling Championships.
Also congratulations are in order for three Portland B anglers.
Joe Robinson took second place overall and Anthony Price took the overall
winners spot in the under 14 individuals with Jordan Kirk taking third
position.
The River Trent is bang on form at the moment with Ian Richardson, the
bailiff at Home Marsh, reporting to us that Trevor Oliver and two of
his friends had a session last week fishing pegs four, five and six
with Trevor taking 108lbs and his mates providing back-up weights of
87lb and 57lb of bream.
We have news of a former Worksop couple Hazel and Andrew Riley who are
now proprietors of Riley Bobs bed and breakfast at Taullyvacan in County
Leitrum near Loch allen, which is a 10-minute drive from Drumshambo
and five minutes from Dowra.
Recent visitor Michael Hill of Worksop went looking for some predator
sport at the beginning of last month, where he had 34 pike which were
mainly ‘Jacks’ and low doubles topped off with a specimin
of 26lb 4oz on deadbaits mainly smelt.
Michael can highly recommend the hospitality as well as the fishing.
For more information email Hazel and Andrew on rileybob@eircom.net
Michael has also been spinning for perch at Woodsetts quarry pond where
on a recent trip he netted six perch with two in excess of 3lb on an
ondex spinner.
TOFT NEWTON
ANOTHER excellent week with an outstanding rod average once again.
Lots of catches of 10+ fish to catch and release anglers with Paul Jesson
from Grimsby and Glen Martin from Heanor both topping the week with
19 fish each.
A few fish on Diawl Bachs still and some taking snail patterns. The
majority now on lures with cats whiskers and minkies fished on fast
sink lines and short leaders working very well.
Fry feeding activity is still a little on and off but as the days get
shorter and the weather cooler things should liven up in the area between
the tower and boat ramp.
Best fish this week to Trevor Ward from Dinnington who caught a 5lb
8oz well-mended rainbow on an orange booby blob from a boat.
DIAWA HALLCROFT
THE match weights at the Retford venue have been a little lower over
the last week due to the onset of the cooler weather.
Croft pool is still the favoured lake with ground bait feeder and a
maggot hook bait doing the business.
As always on all of the four pools, pellet fished on the long pole is
still the most consistent method with corn hook bait proving to be a
productive alternative.
Pole-fished caster is accounting for good mixed bags of roach and skimmers
on bridge and reed pools with bomb-fished corn pellet or meat proving
effective on any pegs with features.
RIVERSIDE ROUND-UP
THERE is only one match to report on from the Scrooby venue this week
which is last Friday’s open, fished on the main match lake: 1st
Keith Noble 24lb 8oz peg 34 pole and pellet, 2nd Doug Hall 21lb 4oz
peg 36 pole and worm.
Fishery owner John informs us that decent carp in the 6l –7lb
bracket, taken on the maggot feeder, are falling to pleasure anglers
on the recently reopened Sandmartins lake.
LODGE FARM ROUND-UP
TUESDAY saw Mick’s Maurauders fishing their regular midweek match
on Long Island: 1st Ian Mellish 49lb 12oz peg 79 pole meat and pellet,
2nd Mick Burrel 45lb peg 88 pole and pellet, 3rd Alan Hadfield 39lb
15oz peg 94 feeder meat and corn.
Worksop Angling Supplies Batchelors were the visitors to the Lily Pond
last Sunday: 1st Brian Harrington 50lb 13oz peg 52 ground bait feeder
with meat hook bait, 2nd Neil Richards 26lb 9oz peg 54 pole and meat,
3rd Bernard O’Connor 14lb 8oz peg 53.
Maggot and meat fished hard on the deck is the most successful method
on long island and lily, with corn also fished hard on the deck doing
the business on field and signal ponds.
SHERWOOD ROUND-UP
THE best match weight of the week at the picturesque venue was Worksop
United’s Brod Perkins who bagged 88lb 5oz of carp in last Wednesday’s
open match on Holmedale. Brod employed hair-rigged meat on the bomb
on peg four.
Also on Holmedale pole-fished pellet and corn is proving effective with
nets to over 77lb but feed very sparingly.
On maunside pole-fished worm over to the far bank has proven to be the
favoured method for mixed nets of small carp chub and ide, whilst on
Cavendish lake sweetcorn fished down the margins is taking carp to 5lb.
LAKESIDE ROUND-UP
THE first round of Lynda’s Lakeside Winter League took place on
Saturday on the match lake at the Ranskill venue where the old adage
of ‘put a good angler on a good peg’ rang true with Gordon
Smith making the most of his draw on peg 29a: 1st Gordon Smith 44lb
13oz peg 29a floating pole and caster, 2nd Paul Lancaster 18lb 9oz peg
25 maggot feeder mixed net, 3rd Ian Lilley 17lb 7oz peg 32 maggot feeder.
On Sunday pole-fished worm and caster was the winning method for Colin
McGarry in the Woodseats League.
Pleasure angler Mark Powell placed his seat box on peg five on the second
strip where he slipped his landing net under 60lb+ of carp, goldfish
and skimmers using the maggot feeder with a maggot or sweet corn hook
bait.
On the carp lake Colin Hadley and Shaun Watson made the journey over
the M62 from Manchester and netted seven fish on peg three using boilies.
Over on the trout lake George Parker cast his green and white fritz
on an intermediate line to tempt 12 fish to an impressive 9½lb
with Worksop’s Keith Harrison using his black buzzers on a floating
line to account for 14 fish to 5lb.
