LAST Saturday saw 44 anglers from Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Derbyshire
and Yorkshire pay their respects to one of fishing’s true characters,
Keith Fretwell, on his favourite venue – the River Trent at Holme
Marsh.
The event was organised by his son Steve and close friend Gordon Smith,
who arranged the pegging in the weeks leading up to the match. The usual
military precision of Derek Brown and Mick Pogson of Worksop District
Angling Association ensured that the event ran trouble-free on the day.
The competitors found the river in a gin clear and unforgiving mood
but this did not deter the camaraderie and banter with all of Keith’s
old friends sharing stories at the draw and the presentation after the
match.
Many of the anglers, including both columnists, did not bother the scales
despite the cream of local angling being represented on the river bank.
The total money raised for the Holme Church Restoration Fund, which
Keith’s widow Christine and son Steve thought would be a fitting
tribute to his memory, totalled £150.
Result: 1st Dave Padley 26lb 60z maggot on the waggler/maggot feeder;
2nd Paul Goulding 8lb 2oz peg 39; 3rd Ray Clay 7lb 1oz.
Christine and Steve would like to thank the Association for the kind
donation of the water, the organisors and helpers, the bailiff Ian Richardson
and members of St. Joseph’s for donating the trophy.
There are plans to make this an annual event to be held on the second
Saturday in September and it is also worth noting that the Torksey Arm
will be open from Monday 1st October but priority must be given to boats
on the moorings.
Derek Brown has also asked us to inform all Worksop D.A.A. delegates
that there is a meeting on Thursday 4th October at 7pm at the Innings
on the Prospect estate.

Aidey Tomlinson 2lb 11.5oz peg six pole fished maggot; 3rd Gordon Holmes
1lb 8oz peg 17 pole fished maggot.
The Hatfield Arms/Peg 31 Trent League continued with a trip to the Wierfield

magic ton if fish hadn’t been lost to the snags: 1st Craig Crosby

LAKESIDE ROUND UP
MATCH weights at the Ranskill venue are up to 78lb 2oz of carp and silver
fish with pole fished worm being the chosen method on peg 23.
Also on the match lake Fred Hardwick topped the field in the Church
Warsop AC club match on Saturday with a mixed net of 53lb 4oz off peg
10 using pole fished pellet and meat with the best silver fish match
weight falling to pole fished caster off peg 16 taking the dial around
to 69lb 3oz .
Pleasure anglers are still enjoying good sport on the strip ponds with
Simon Parkinson of Worksop slipping his landing net under carp to 13lb
10oz, tench to 6lb as well as quality roach, goldfish and skimmers in
his 150lb-plus bag from peg eight on the second strip by employing pole
fished sweetcorn and meat.
On the carp lake, Pete Murray and Alan Brown made their long journey
from Middlesbrough worthwhile landing 13 specimins which included five
20s and a common of 30lb off peg 1 on boilies.
Over on the trout lake, John Lowe cast his black buzzer on a floating
line to tempt seven fish to an impressive 12lb 8oz with Worksop’s
Mark Smithson netting 15 fish to 6lb on segmented bloodworm and sinking
line.
LODGE FARM ROUND UP
FIRSTLY a reminder for the forthcoming match in aid of the Parkinson’s
Disease Doncaster branch which is to take place on the field pond on
Saturday 6th October with a £15 all in entry fee and a 9am draw.
To register telephone 07815 030694.
Bill also tells us that on the field pond the fish are being caught
at all depths with a maggot and caster hook bait, on the lily pond pole
fished caster and maggot shallow is the top method and on the top pond
the skimmers are responding to a worm hook bait over a bed of ground
bait with the roach being tempted by caster.
DAIWA HALLCROFT RESULTS
THE best match weights at the Retford venue are falling on the Bridge
pool where 85lb was needed to win Tuesday’s open match with carp
to 10lb being taken on cat meat in the margins with corn and pellet
being a good alternative also fished down the edge.
On the moat pool, a near 60lb was needed to win Saturday’s open
match with maggot on the short pole and corn down the margins being
the killer baits.
Croft is worth a look with all baits accounting for plenty of bites.

2nd Pete Ellis Sherwood Forest Fishery 77lb 14oz peg 36; 3rd Andy Findlay

TOFT NEWTON ROUND UP
SEVENTY-SEVEN rods caught 253 for a rod average of 3.3, not too bad
a week considering the conditions.
Mick Angell and Andy Clark from Scunthorpe produced the best catch this
week taking 34 fish on a mixture of daddies and orange blobs. Best fish
this week was a 5Ib 9oz brownie caught by Mr Umney.
Plenty of fish from the north west corner right around to black pipe,
a few near the tower just beginning to chase fry.
Fish are very close in and the best method is to fish along the bank
with daddies, Diawl Bachs, damsels or olive lures.
