Congratulations to the youngsters representing Worksop &D.A.A. who took part in the N.J.A.A. nationals last Saturday on the Grand Union Canal near Milton Keynes.
They managed a creditable 8th place on a venue that is renowned for being extremely hard to master without any prior practice sessions.
Reece Nicholson claimed a section win and third place overall with a weight of 1kg 800g. Thanks to Greg Forester of Worksop Angling Supplies for the donation of bait.
Also on Saturday the N.F.A Division 2 National took place on the Foss Dyke navigation and Worksop D.A.A. controlled waters of the Chesterfield Canal. Good weights were thrown up from the canal especially from the J section on St Peters Lane at Clayworth.
The event ran smoothly thanks to the chief steward Roger Marsh and his team of helpers. Roger would like to thank British waterways, the land owners and farmers for the car parking facilities, Nigel Stafford and Ray Stanley for keeping the bankside vegetation trimmed and the Retford and Worksop boat club at Clayworth for their kind hospitality.
Anyone who has fished the Trent knows the problems that can be caused by the wildlife with wasps on a short fuse and swans invading swims. But this took on a whole new dimension for local angler Andy lakey last Sunday on a visit to Newark Dyke with St Josephs A.C.
After walking through a herd of cows and bullocks Andy settled onto his peg on the top of a bank with a few feet drop to the water, when a good size bullock decided to sample the contents of his bait bucket leaving Andy teetering on the top of the bank. Despite his protestations the beast refused to move and changed his attention to Andy’s carryall which it seemed to prefer to chew in preference to his carefully prepared groundbait. His fellow anglers were as helpful as can usually be expected by singing the theme from rawhide and offering helpful comments between gasping for a breath of air between guffaws of laughter. Fortunately Andy took all of this in good humour and the bullock eventually wandered off, but this can be a lesson to us all to make sure your groundbait isn’t tastier to bulls than it is to fish.

The main lake at the Ranskill venue is still fishing very well with 78lb 11oz needed to win the Bank Holiday open match which was taken from peg 37 by John Powell employing bomb fished pellet for a mixed net of carp and silvers.
Match weights of silver fish have been going to 50lb with pole fished luncheon meat or caster being the favoured methods in club matches.
On the strip ponds Martin Jackson landed over 120lb using bomb fished luncheon meat or sweetcorn from peg 5 on the second strip. Martin netted carp up to 15lb 4oz in this mixed bag. On the carp lake Worksop’s Mark banked a personal best common of 24lb 1oz from peg 4 using hair rigged sweetcorn with venue regular John Vardy using the more conventional boilie hook bait to take 12 fish to 19lb 7oz from peg 2. Over on the trout lake, Harry Booth cast his segmented blood worm on a sinking line to tempt nine fish to an impressive 11lb 4oz with Steve Walsh slipping his landing net under 14 fish to 5lb on a black buzzer with floating line.

LODGE FARM ROUND UP
Bill’s top tip of the week is that pole fished sweetcorn is accounting for good nets of skimmers and tench from pegs in the high 30s on the Top Pond.
On Long Island, caster pole fished at varying depths is taking good match weights of mainly carp with pole fished pellet the best bet on Lily Pond. He also tells us that on signal and field ponds that pole fished pellet is again the top method but don’t discount maggot , caster or meat also late in the day on all four carp lakes at the Scrooby top complex corn or meat fished in the margins are temting the better specimens in pleasure sessions.
DIAWA HALLCROFT ROUND UP
All ponds producing reasonable weights of carp and skimmers but the warmer spell of weather has temporarily halted the big 100lb+ nets. Moat Pool: Carp and bigger bream being taken on pole and pellet or meat at 6 and 8m. Try feeder fished right across and hair-rigged corn or meat for larger carp. Croft Pool: Providing good sport with carp to 5lb on pole and pellet or meat at 8 and 10m. Bridge Pool: Regularly producing mixed nets of 60lb+ with the odd big carp as a bonus on corn or catmeat down the edge. Reed Pool: Larger carp showing early and late on larger baits. Smaller carp and silvers coming to pellet or maggot at 8 and 10m.
