THE memorial match to be held in honour of the late angling legend Keith
Fretwell has been postponed due to a clash of dates.
Worksop and District Angling Association had originally planned to hold
it in conjunction with the Holme Church fundraiser on Saturday 15th
September, but it has now been moved back a week to Saturday 22nd September.
The match will be fished on part of the Holme Marsh and Winthorpe stretches
of the River Trent with an all-in fee of £13, with Worksop DAA
kindly donating the £3 pegging fee to the church fund; a cause
which Keith’s widow and son Steve would like all the monies raised
to go to.
There will be a one-off trophy donated by the members of the executive
committee and the remainder of the entry fee will be paid out in prize
money. The draw takes place at the cattle grid car park which is located
by turning left at the telephone box in the T-junction in Holme village
at 8.30am with the fishing taking place between 10.30am to 3.30pm. To
register for the match or for any further details ring 01909 480419
after 5pm.
We would like to offer our commiserations to Gordon Smith and Andrew
Lakey who unfortunately failed in their attempt to win the Maver Pairs
last week at Maver Larford.
CLUB RESULTS
BRITISH Gas Angling Club have two matches to report on, the first was
last Thursday when they visited Kiveton Waters.
They had to contend with strong winds and generally the fishing was
very poor with only one carp caught, however both the winner and runner-up
lost a few good fish throughout the match. 1st Mick Pogson 10lb 10oz
pole; 2nd Alan Hadfield 10lb; 3rd Alan Richardson 5lb 12oz.
The second match saw them visit Bank End where they fished the West
End last Saturday; 1st Steve Pogson 101lb 4oz carp to 3lb on floating
pole and pellet; 2nd Mick Pogson 43lb 8oz carp to 8lb on pole, pellet
and paste; 3rd Mick Simpson 41lb 6oz pole and paste; 4th Pete Brown
38lb 4oz small carp on floating pole.
St Joseph’s Angling Club made the journey to the River Trent last
Sunday where they found the Ness Farm stretch in an unforgiving mood
with the fishing very patchy at best with prolonged rain throughout
the second half of the match: 1st Stuart Lilley 8lb 8oz peg 19 ground
bait feeder worm, red maggot or caster hookbait; 2nd Thomas Davenport
3lb 15oz peg three ground bait feeder worm/caster hookbait; 3rd Ronnie
Finch 3lb 3oz peg 23 stick float and ground bait feeder.
Stanlet Street Sports and Social Angling Club also visited the Trent
last Sunday this time to Fiskerton: 1st James Kirkham 11lb 3oz ground
bait feeder; 2nd Steve Hill 6lb 5oz feeder; 3rd I. Joyaston 3lb 10oz
feeder. The top junior weight fell to Ryan Bolton with 1lb 12oz.
The Worksop disabled anglers made the short journey to Scrooby where
they held their latest Tuesday match on the main lake at Riverside:
1st Pete Scott 54lb 5oz peg five pole fished red maggot stockie carp;
2nd Mel Kirton 37lb 7oz peg four red maggot for mainly stockies; 3rd
Mick Drage 27lb 8oz.
Members of the Ryton AC fished the River Derwent on Sunday 12th August
where father and son duo Neil and Ashley Nicholson claimed the first
two places: 1st Neil Nicholson 5lb 3oz; 2nd Ashley Nicholson 4lb 15.5oz;
3rd Gareth Kirk 4lb 15oz.
Anglers from Dinnington AC fished the lily pond over at Lodge Farm at
Scrooby Tops last Saturday where pole fished pellet was the chosen method
for the top three: 1st Gordon Simms 62lb 4oz peg 59; 2nd Mick Large
45lb 1oz peg 68; 3rd John Foster 28lb 6oz peg 72.
On Sunday, Maltby Colliery AC held their latest match, also at Lodge
Farm, but this time on the top (silver fish) pond where pole fished
pellet and maggot accounted for mainly skimmers, perch and tench: 1st
Wayne Spencer 18lb 14oz peg 27; 2nd Tom Eyre peg 45 15lb 7oz; 3rd Trevor
Haith peg 41 14lb 4oz.
LAKESIDE ROUND-UP
SATURDAY saw the best match weight of the year fall at the Ranskill
venue in the Bramley Social Club ACs club match where venue regular
Carl Sweatnam pole fished meat on peg 38 to put a mixed bag together
148lb 4oz.
John Smithson of Worksop enjoyed a midweek pleasure session on the match
lake when he sat himself down on peg 29. John pole fished pellet and
meat to put together a carp and silver fish net in excess of 150lb,
included in this haul was an elastic stretching common of 18lb.
The strip ponds are producing plenty of bites and are an ideal venue
for novices, with maggot producing plenty of small silver fish and pellet,
meat and corn finding favour with the bigger lumps.
On the carp lake, Rob Cheetham tackled peg five where he slipped his
landing net under 10 specimen to 20lb 10oz with John Vardy on peg two
netting an eight-fish haul.
Over on the trout lake, Dean Wilson tempted 13 rainbows on various buzzers
and a floating line with fellow fly caster Dennis Mates bagging four
fish to 8lb on a cats whisker and intermediate line.
RIVERSIDE ROUND-UP
TUESDAY sees the next phase of the restocking policy taking place at
the Scrooby venue with 1,000 small carp of around 8oz being introduced
to the Sandmartins lake.
Friday’s veterans’ match saw Jeff Bennet pole fish pellet
to record a win with 23lb 9oz with Reg Turner claiming the runners-up
spot with 19lb 2oz employing the same method as the winner.
DAIWA HALLCROFT ROUND-UP
SOME superb fishing this week for both the pleasure and match anglers
saw Luke Sears weighing a near venue record of 192lb 11oz from outer
peg 54 in Friday’s open held on the moat pool.
All over the complex, good weights have been recorded both on bridge
and moat pools. Corn is starting to produce big weights of carp especially
with fishing to the margins. Pellet is still the best all-round choice
particularly for the bigger weights of bream.
There are plenty of smaller fish to be taken on maggot and caster on
both croft and reed pools and they continue to fish well.
Croft Pool: Pleasure weights to 60lb on pellet and corn.
Moat Pool: Big weights of carp to 100lb plus on corn, pellet and catmeat.
Skimmers and bream to 4lb on meat and pellet.
Bridge Pool: Good mixed weights of bream, silvers and carp to 100lb
plus on pellet, corn or meat.
Reed Pool: Plenty of silvers taken on pellet and corn, bigger carp on
catmeat and paste.
LODGE FARM ROUND-UP
WEDNESDAY evening’s open match on field pond saw pole fished meat
claiming the top three places: 1st Nick Speed 34lb 3oz peg eight; 2nd
Stuart Grey 31lb 4oz peg 12; 3rd Phil Morgan 29lb 6oz peg 33.
Pole fished pellet shallow is Bill’s top tip if you are fishing
any of the carp pools this week with signal pond producing match weights
of small carp up to 86lb with a little and often feeding pattern on
the long pole with varying depth until the fish are located. On the
lily pond, the railway bank is the best area for pleasure weights with
the margins also worth a look later in the day.
TOFT NEWTON ROUND-UP
EIGHTY-FIVE rods caught 317 fish for a rod average of 3.7 during the
week.
After a difficult start to the week, fishing improved dramatically with
more unsettled weather returning early in the week. The best bank catch
this week fell to John Evans who caught 21 fish mostly on diawl bachs
and he also took the best rainbow of the week at 4Ib 4oz.
THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE
A REMINDER to all members of the Worksop Piscatorial Members that the
next match is on Sunday 26th August on the Chesterfield Canal.
On the sea fishing front, a group of Dinnington and Langold anglers
from T.H.E. Section Bending set sail from Bridlington harbour last Saturday
on the Yorkshireman where they fished the rough ground off Bempton Cliffs
around Flambrough head.
The fishing proved to be hectic with plenty of codling and mackerel
falling to a variety of lures and baits. With neap tides from early
next week it will be worth a trip if the weather holds.
The annual Filey Fishing Festival takes place next month from Saturday
1st to Sunday 9th including all disciplines of sea angling with both
boat and shore matches culminating in the North of England codling championship
with a first prize of £500 up for grabs.
