Anglers hit by floods
by angling correspondents Roger Stocks and Stuart Lilley

THE CURRENT period of prolonged heavy rainfall is having a massive impact on all
local fisheries with significant drops in water temperatures affecting the normal
summer feeding patterns.
At the time of writing there is no let up and the whole of the area is suffering
from flood water to some degree, but nowhere worse than at the Riverside Fishery
at Scrooby as reported in last week’s column.
John and his team have been working valiantly keeping on top of protecting the
fish stocks but Sunday evening saw all four of the complex’s pumps being
stolen in the space of half an hour.
John has already replaced the pumps and has reported the incident to the police
but if you are planning to fish the complex contact Les Richmond on 07795202525
for an update on conditions.
On a brighter note Worksop and DAA have appointed two new bailiffs, Jason Bergin
will cover Sandhills and Woodsetts Pond and Ian Richardson will police the Trent-on-Holme
Marsh and Winthorpe where up until last week there have been reports of some fine
catches.
These appointments will complement Worksop’s impressive fishery management
and we wish them well with their role.
Last Friday evening saw the annual Grafton AA commemorative junior match taking
place on the John Shaw’s section of the Chesterfield Canal where, for a
change, the rain held off for the 30 youngsters taking part.
John Searle of Worksop and DAA took the honours in the 13-15 age group with a
net of 6kg 740g with Thomas Brunt claiming the runners-up position with 3kg 560g,
and Ryan Bolton in third place with 3kg 350g.
In the 10-12 age bracket Ben Frost led the way on peg 102 with 2kg 50g with young
starlet Devon Whitworth in second place with 1kg 650g off peg 97 and Oliver Hopkiss
making up the frame with 1kg 40g.
Mick Simpson of Grafton AA would like to thank Ken Ward’s Sports for their
generous support of this event and Ken Stevenson for presenting the prizes on
Ken Ward’s behalf.
We are currently putting the final touches to the inter-schools match, unfortunately
the current weather has delayed the final risk assessment on the pegs but all
the rest of the logistics have been completed and all the schools participating
have been informed.
However we have had a couple of enquiries from schools where the details have
been lost in their admin system. If your school has not yet received confirmation
and details please contact us asap.

due to Terry and staff at Hallcroft, to all parents and others for transport,
to Phil Moore for help and advice and Stuart Wilson in Year 7 for help on the
day.
John will be selecting two teams to compete and defend the second Guardian Annual
Inter-Schools Match at Hallcroft on Wednesday 18th July.
DAIWA HALLCROFT FORM
Despite the heavy rain and high water levels the fishery has continued to produce
good nets of fish.
Croft Pool – Stockie carp to 3lb in nets of 60lb plus on corn and pellet
with the odd larger specimen on paste.
Bridge Pool – Good mixed nets to 80lb of carp and skimmers. Paste and pellet
at 12m and corn in the margins having best results.
Moat Pool – Again mixed nets to 80lb on pellet or paste at 13m or pellet
at 6m. Odd larger carp to 12lb being caught on catmeat and bomb.
Reed Pool – The carp continue to dominate with two or three fish to 10lb
not uncommon in nets of 90lb on corn or paste at 11m.
SHERWOOD PARK FORM
On the Holmedale Lake, Barnsley’s Glen Greasley has made it his own winning
the last three open matches, fishing the method feeder with pellet and meat on
the hook his lowest winning weight was 93lb 1oz and his highest being 154lb 6oz.
All pegs and methods are producing well, with the margins fishing better latter
in the day, carp to 16lb have been reported.
Lots of crucians to 2lb have been caught on the Sherwood Lake (pegs 10-18) and
Langdale both fishing pole at 5m with double red maggot or pellet on the hook
feeding pellets little and often nets – 45lb on the Langdale with the help
of a few bonus 3lb chub.
On the road side of the Sherwood there have been lots of bream nets to 50lb plus
on the pole and pellet fished long at 13m and pegs 40, 41 and 42 have produced
carp to 17lb on the feeder cast to the island and weed beds.
The Cavendish continues its top class form for skimmers to 2lb on the pole pellet,
caster or worm, also carp to 14lb on the method feeder cast to the far bank.
The Maunside has moved up a gear and is fishing its head off, pleasure fishing
the pole and caster up the far self feeding 10 caster every put in will soon have
the chub to 3lb.
Boiling pellet fished at the bottom of the self will pick out the carp to 4lb.
You will have aching arms when you finish your session on there – just like
Mansfield’s Graham Eden did fishing Sunday’s match with Mansfield
AA.
Drawn at peg 11 he fished the pole caster and worm up to the far bank for chub
to 2lb.
A change to bread flake in the last 90 minutes brought him some bigger fish and
carp to 4lb weighing in 102lb 7oz and breaking the previous match record by 6lb.
CLUB RESULTS
THE Jays AC of Langold held their latest match on the match lake at Lakeside last
Sunday.
1st Craig Wilson 44lb 3oz peg five mixed bag short pole and caster; 2nd Gareth
Whitfield 43lb 12oz peg 13; 3rd John Wilson 40lb 6oz peg 15.
Bircotes Angling Society fished the top pond at Lodge Farm last Sunday.
1st Mark Hawkes 21lb 5oz peg 24 skimmers; 2nd Les Richmond 15lb 12oz peg 27 worm
and caster; 3rd Brian Bennett 12lb 6oz peg 37 pole and pellet.
LAKESIDE ROUND UP
The silver fish at the Ranskill venue are still dominating the match weights which
are touching 50lb with pole fished caster being the chosen method.
But pleasure anglers on the strip ponds are connecting with quality carp with
Rob Wainwright banking a 100lb plus net off peg three on the second strip.
John had a common carp just over 11lb as well as skimmers, goldfish and specimen
roach employing pole fished pellet and caster.
On the carp lake Mark West of Retford had a fantastic session when he landed 22
specimens – the best a 26lb 8oz common from peg four using hair-rigged boilies.
Garry Croft’s long journey from Manchester was made worthwhile with his
nine-fish haul including a 25lb 8oz mirror off peg five.
Over on the trout lake Andy Smith slipped his landing net under 12 fish which
included an impressive rainbow of 7lb 8oz which fell to cats whisker on intermediate
line.
Worksop’s Craig Dobson cast his black buzzers on a floating line to tempt
10 fish to 5lb.
LODGE FARM
Wednesday evening’s open match on Field Pond saw the top three all have
weights within 2lb of one another in a tight contest.
1st Les Richmond 50lb 12oz peg 27 pole fished meat; 2nd Mick Peddle 49lb 11oz
peg 14 pole and pellet; 3rd Daz Godley 48lb 12oz peg four pole fished meat.
The big news is that the pond record has been broken again on Long Island with
164lb 5oz landed on peg 88 with pole fished caster fished shallow being the chosen
method.
Over on lily pond, 130lb 10oz was the best match weight of the week with this
time pole fished pellet shallow being the most productive tactic on peg 65.
On the two new ponds Bill informs us that pellet or luncheon meat are the best
baits at the present time – but tell us that depth the fish feed at depends
on the weather conditions.
THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE
At Toft Newton, 78 rods took 232 fish, the best being a 4lb 2oz rainbow to Teresa
Warner from Haxey on a pheasant tail nymph with red thorax.
There are lots of fish on top when overcast with Shipman’s buzzers, invictas,
damsels and sedge patterns working well. Excellent evening rises and large hatches
of sedges, so be prepared to stay late for the best sport.
Fishing best upwind – mainly black pipe and boat ramp bank, boats drifting
loch-style with traditional wets.
The fishery is open seven days a week from 7.30am to dark, for more information
call 01673 878453.
Maureen Morgan tells us that with the season having only just begun there are
already some big catches to speak of at Welbeck.
Last week one man caught over 150lbs at the Middle Lake, with good catches at
both the Bottom and Middle Lakes being recorded.
Earlier in the week, there was a catch of over 80lbs at the Top Lake.
If there are some keen anglers still out there wishing to fish the lakes at
Welbeck there are permits still available.
