ANYONE reading last week’s column will remember our comments that
the rivers were in pristine condition for the start of the season on
Saturday.
In our defence it has to be understood that we write the column on a
Monday evening and we had no way of knowing that we were in for a deluge
that would have shook Noah.
On the usually ‘glorious 16th’ there were leaden skies and
the whole area was recovering from the days of torrential rain with
levels up and in the most part unfishable, with the exception of a few
hardy souls who ventured out.
However, at the time of writing we are already receiving reports that
as water levels are falling, the rivers are hitting form with barbell
to 8.5lb falling to Tommy Davenport on a session at Normanton on Trent.
Alex Roebuck tells us that the newly opened sections of the canal are
fishing extremely well with Pete Prendergast of Woodhouse taking bream
to 4lb on double red maggot on the long pole at the St Peter’s
Lane stretch of the Chesterfield Canal.
It wasn’t only the rivers that felt the effect of the floods,
a lot of the area’s still waters were drowned under several feet
of flood water with the end result being that unfortunately we had to
cancel the junior fun/teach day at Riverside much to the disappointment
of all the youngsters. We can only offer our apologies and we will try
to rearrange the session for later in the year.
Fishery owner John and venue stalwart Les Richmond saved any of the
fisheries stocks being swept in to the river and we have to commend
them on their quick-thinking.
Finally our commiserations to Ryton Angling Club’s Reece Nicholson
who narrowly missed out on an England place for the junior world championships
following last Sunday’s trials. Despite failing to make the squad
he impressed the selectors and stands a good chance for next year.
We would like to wish fellow Worksop junior Josh Wild a speedy recovery
following his recent accident whilst playing football which has left
him with a broken leg and out for the rest of the season. Stick to fishing
Josh and get well soon.

celebrated Alan Sargeson’s 60th birthday on the Wednesday and
we would like to offer our good wishes to him on still managing to fish
at this age.
LAKESIDE ROUND-UP
THE best match weight to fall over the last week at the Ranskill venue
was the 125lb 3oz of carp and silvers taken on pole fished dog biscuit
off peg 12 by Paul Cartlidge last Tuesday.
On Wednesday, venue regulars Wickersley AC visited and Tony Bell put
together an impressive winning weight of silver fish weighing 95lb 7oz
from peg 22 using pole fished worm.
On the strip lakes, pleasure catches are exceeding 200lb with Paul Green
taking a mixed bag of carp goldfish tench and skimmers which included
22 carp to 14lb 10oz employing pole fished pellet and sweetcorn from
peg four on the second strip.
On the carp lake, the specimens are begging to stir after spawning with
Mark Richardson landing a nine-fish haul off peg five which included
a common of 25lb 4oz, and Paul Evans banking a 23lb 10oz common in his
seven-fish net off peg one.
Over on the trout lake, John Hamilton tempted 11 rainbows to 9lb on
cats whisker and floating line with Worksop’s Les Perkins casting
his various buzzers on a floating line to take 14 fish to 5lb.
But the big news over the last week is that Linda’s Jack Russell
Trixie has given birth to five pups, our congratulations go to Linda
and Trixie.
RIVERSIDE ROUND UP
LAST Monday’s open match on Sandmartins saw Brian Crowther pole
fishing pellet and meat to take a winning net of 84lb 5oz of small carp
taken off peg 20 with Les Richmond claiming the runners-up position
with 55lb 15oz off peg 16 using pellet waggler.
In Tuesday’s open on the main lake the silver fish record was
smashed yet again by venue expert Les Richmond with an impressive net
of 72lb 8oz taken on the short pole with caster on peg 32 with Pete
Ware netting 52lb 11oz off peg 36 to claim second place fishing meat
shallow.
Friday’s veterans match saw Reg Turner put a winning net of 83lb
10oz on the scales fishing meat shallow from peg 10. John tells us that
hopefully from today the venue will be re-opened following the recent
floods but he recommends that you give him a ring first on 01302 711889
to confirm.
DAIWA HALLCROFT ROUND-UP
MATCH weights on the Retford venue are pushing the ton barrier with
pellet fished shallow on the long pole or paste on the short pole the
chosen tactic on the moat pool.
On reed pool, corn or meat fished on the feeder is accounting for carp
to 8lb with cat presented down the edge also worth a look at.
On croft pool, pole fished pellet is doing the business on the short
and long pole for the smaller carp to 3lb and on bridge pool, fished
pellet and meat presented on the deck is the chosen method for mixed
nets of carp and skimmers.
LODGE FARM ROUND-UP
LAST Wednesday night’s three-hour sprint was fished on field pond
where yet again the winner was Les Richmond from peg 24 using pole fished
meat for 48lb 10oz. Runner-up was Marcus Orrit with 45lb 15oz from peg
32 and filling the frame was Richard Patterson from peg 34 with 34lb
2oz.
Over on Long Island, the pond record was broken yet again by Tony Prentice
from Rotherham with 146lb 7oz using pole fished maggot shallow from
peg 86.
The best bait to use on top pond is worm and caster which is accounting
for nets of skimmers to 25lb. On the rest of the ponds most baits are
producing the goods with pleasure weights going over 100lb.
SHERWOOD FOREST FARM PARK
HOLMEDALE Lake, Gateford Angling Summer Series round four, 25 fished:
1st Glenn Greasley (Oaks AC) 93lb 10z peg 39; 2nd Steve Clark (Mansfield)
73lb peg 46; 3rd Kev Baxter (Daiwa Trentmen 59lb 2oz peg 49.
It was a warm summer’s day at the start of the match but two hours
in the heavens opened and it rained heavy to the end of the match. But
by the time the rain started Glenn had got 10 carp in the net and plenty
feeding in his swim. He fished a method feeder cast towards the end
of the island at peg 39 with pellet on the hook to finish the match
with more than 30 carp (5lb) and a weight of 93lb.
Tuesday, 21 fished: 1st Kev Baxter (Daiwa Trentman) 54lb 15oz peg 42;
2nd John Holmes (Dynamite Mayfair) 30lb 11oz peg 57.
When Kev drew peg 42 there was only going to be one winner, but he struggled
in the first half of the match. A change from fishing pole and pellet
to pole and paste down the margin brought him a 7lb carp on his first
put-out followed by seven more and a few bream (2lb) was enough to seal
victory.
