FOLLOWING on from last week’s column, we are happy to report that there
has already been a healthy response to the inter-schools match with a number of
schools requesting to enter two teams.
We are therefore exploring the possibility of expanding the event if we can secure
another of the fishery’s lakes to accommodate the additional interest.
All the letters have been sent to the schools in the Guardian readership area,
so if you attend any of these and are interested in fishing then have a word with
your teachers to register with us at the above email or contact phone numbers.
Staying with the junior side of our sport we have had a report that the Worksop
Juniors and Cadets fished a practice session on the High School length of the
Chesterfield Canal in Retford where there were decent weights returned –
the best being in the junior section from Thomas Brunt with 16lb 14oz taken on
pole fished worm, Kyle Moore 8lb 14oz and Devon Whitworth 7lb 6oz.
In the under 12s cadet section Michael Tamborini 4lb 13oz on pole fished maggot,
Liam Bradshaw 4lb 6oz and Joel Potts 3lb 11oz with everyone else having a fruitful
and productive day.
It is worth noting that in the recent Worksop delegates and book holders match
two of the top three places were taken by members of the Worksop junior squad.
We can think of no better grounding for any youngster interested in starting fishing
improving their knowledge or honing their match fishing skills, although it is
not totally match orientated.
For any youngsters who are interested in joining you can contact Doreen or Garry
Butt on 01909 770546 and they will be able to give you all the details you will
need to sign up.

LAKESIDE ROUND-UP
Thursday saw an all-silver fish match taking place on the main lake where Mark
Brannon put a winning bag on the scales of 89lb 11oz off peg 32 employing pole
fished worm and caster.
On Saturday evening in a four-hour sprint Thurcroft’s Pete O’Donovan
fished pellet and paste on peg 15 to take a mainly carp net for a winning weight
of 88lb 15oz.
On Sunday it was the final round of the R&R Spring League where Steve Forster
led the way with a mixed bag of 87lb 14oz off peg six using pole fished pellet
with Dinnington’s Ray Clay claiming the runners-up position off peg eight
with 71lb 8oz.
The overall league winner was former Worksop AA captain Steve Lowther with nine
points. On the second strip pond pleasure angler Paul Todd of Worksop tempted
a 120lb plus net of roach, skimmers, carp and gold fish on peg three using a sweetcorn
or pellet hook bait on the pole.
On the Carp Lake Shane Chandlers landed 10 fish to 21lb 10oz off peg five using
a boilie hook bait.
And over on the trout lake Worksop’s Ray Jackson cast his white fritz on
an intermediate line to net 14 trout to 6lb 8oz, with fellow fluff chucker Colin
Patterson landing 17 fish on various buzzers and floating line.
RIVERSIDE ROUND-UP
On the main lake venue regular Les Richmond has been taking match winning nets
to 73lb using the pellet waggler, and he also used this method to good effect
on the Sandmartins later in the week where he also landed a match-winning bag
this time weighing in at 64lb.
When the carp are not feeding, pole fished caster is a good way of putting decent
wrights together to 36lb consisting of silverfish.
For pleasure angling, pole fished pellet and paste is recommended on Sandmartins
and the main lake also the pellet feeder on all three lakes. The strip pond is
fishing well for pleasure anglers on the bomb or the feeder with weights going
to over 50lb.
Floating baits are now banned on the open matches but are allowed on the club
matches where it is left to the discretion of the anglers participating.
There will be an open match on May Bank Holiday Monday with the cost being £12
all in, which includes a golden peg. The draw is at 9.30 am in the café.
The veterans’ over 50 Friday matches are going to start on 4th May. For
more information or to register call John on 01302 711889.
LODGE FARM ROUND-UP
The Scrooby Top venue continues its recent good form where fish are now responding
to most baits fished up in the water, this showed with A. South taking 99lb 7oz
from peg 89 on Long Island using pole and maggot fished shallow last Sunday.
On Lily Pond Mark Royston pole fished caster shallow for a winning weight of 97lb
4oz of carp, while on Signal Pond the fish are responding mainly to pole and pellet
at half depth and above with Field fishing much the same.
On the top pond the skimmers are a bit deeper with roach responding to a falling
bait with the tench located just over the first shelf around the 30s pegs.
DAIWA HALLCROFT ROUND-UP
The Retford venue is responding to the warmer weather with the match weights generally
pushing the 100lb mark.
Steve Robbins recorded the best match weight of the week in Thursday event on
Moat Pool, fishing corn down the edge on island peg 39 to land carp to 8lb in
his 126lb winning net.
On Croft Pool, Nick informs us that paste fished on the short pole is accounting
for good nets of carp to 8lb and over on Reed Pool meat fished shallow is his
top tip with bomb fished cat meat also worth a cast.
On Moat Pool, fishing the pellet waggler shallow is a good method for pleasure
anglers wanting a days sport but remember to keep the bait going in a little and
often basis.
On Bridge Pool, one of the caravan residents had a day to remember fishing paste
on the short pole where he managed to bank 28 lumps with many well in to double
figures.
Pellet fished on the long pole is a safe bet for mixed bags of skimmers and carp
and again bomb fished catmeat is worth a try.
SHERWOOD ROUND-UP
Peg 31 is still the peg to draw on the Holmedale Lake with meat or pellet fished
on the long pole being the top method for Craig Brazier.
Brazier managed to put a winning 166lb 7oz on the scales in last Wednesday’s
match in which the top three all managed to break the 100lb barrier.
The method feeder is also worth a look at on the pegs with a feature like an island
or a bed of lilys but patience is needed with the fish sometimes taking over a
hour to respond to regular casting.
Again the margins are not to be ignored with corn being the favourite hook bait
of the moment.
On Sherwood Lake, last Tuesday afternoon’s open match was topped by John
Tingle on peg 42 with pole fished pellet employed to put 40lb of skimmers in his
keep net with the rest of his 54lb 7oz bag made up of carp.
Carp to 12lb are patrolling the margins late in the afternoons mopping up any
spilt bait, so if these lumps are your quarry beef up your gear accordingly.
THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE
Would all members of Worksop Piscatorials please note that their AGM is arranged
for 8th May at the Innings starting at 7pm.
Worksop and District AA canal baliff Alex Roebuck tells us that the High School
and Asda length of the cut is fishing exceptionally well since the warmer weather
arrived and summer fishing is here, with Retford angler Greg Ward taking three
bream to 3.5lb on breadflake presented on a size 14 hook from the boatyard.
Worksop rod Russ Brown took a good net of chub from behind the High School.
