LAST Saturday saw competitors from across the Guardian readership area lining the north beach at Hornsea for the annual Guardian invitation beach match.
The thermometer never reached above freezing all day and this, added to thick wet fog and a northerly surf crashing onto the beach, made almost perfect conditions for Cod and Whiting.
It's just a pity the fish didn't know this and bites were few and far between, with the majority being small dabs and flounders.
Winner Colin Roscoe of Treeton weighed in a whiting of 1lb 8oz, and joint runners-up John Hunt, of Rhodesia, and Roger Stocks were a mere ounce behind on 1lb 7oz.
A special mention must go to Worksop youngster Shaun Whitworth, a pupil at St John's School, who at just seven years old stuck out in conditions that saw some hardened veterans leave the beach early.
Shaun was applauded for his determination and dedication to see the six hour event out to the bitter end, and he was rewarded for his efforts with the Ray Mallendar Commerative Junior Trophy and a tackle voucher.
Some of the contestants opted to stay overnight, rather than face the long drive home, and they were unaminous in recommending the Albert and Victoria Guest House.
Proprietor Graham Hird, himself an avid fisherman, caters for fishing parties and can arrange bait for guests.

On the theme of sea baits, which can be notoriously hard to come by at this time of year, it is worth noting that Ken Ward Sports has begun to stock a range of frozen gulley lug and other baits which will prove invaluable for those impromptu sessions.
COMMERCIAL ROUND UP
OVER at Ranskill, the Lynda's Lakeside Winter League second round took place on Saturday, when Retford's Darren Godley led the way with a bag of silvers weighing 18lb 13oz from peg 13, employing pole fished maggot over ground bait.
Andy Spick claimed the runners-up position from peg 38, using bomb fished meat to weigh 15lb 11oz and Dave Wright was in third with 15lb 4oz from peg 29, using pole fished maggot.
The maggot feeder has been featuring in match weights in excess of 20lb on the match lake, whilst on the second strip pond, despite the cold snap, pole fished pellet was the method responsible in D.J. Angling's silver fish only match on the second strip.
On the carp lake Rotherham's Darren Patterson bagged three specimens to 24lb 4oz from peg five, whilst over on the trout lake John Collins landed a rainbow of 10lb in his 21-fish haul on segmented bloodworm and a sinking line.
Peter Jones tempted 19 fish, which included two over 8lb, on a cat's whisker presented on an intermediate line.
Retford's Daiwa Hallcroft complex has seen entrants in the silver fish league getting plenty of bites on blood worm, fished over joker, presented on the long pole on moat bridge and reed pools.
In the more conventional matches, bomb fished pellet is proving to be the most effective method when cast to any features in nets to 60lb. Last Wednesday's Gateford Angling Supplies sponsored match, at Sherwood Forest Farm Park, saw four local anglers Bernard O'Connor , Brod Perkins, Dave Lane and Geoff Mawby claim places in the top six, with Bernard coming out on top with a net of 42lb 9oz from peg 45.
He also claimed the golden peg. On Sherwood Lake, the wag and mag has been producing plenty of bites from the resident small roach, whilst on Cavendish Lake pole and pellet has accounted for skimmer nets in excess of 15lb, and pole fished maggot has seen plenty of action from small perch and roach.
At Lodge Farm at Scrooby, the Likely Lads opted to fish their Tuesday knock up on the Lily and Long Island, where Chris Line used bomb and corn to put a winning net together of 40lb 9oz from peg 54 on Lily, and Dave Lane claimed second place with 18lb 15oz from peg 100 on Long Island, employing bomb fished corn.
Thursday's open on field and signal pond, saw all the main frame come from the field with Roy Butterfield using the ground bait feeder with a corn hook bait to good effect from peg eight, to land 80lb 12oz.
Keith Morris used bomb and meat in second place with 35lb 4oz on peg 35.
Saturday's open on Lily and Long Island saw Steve Whiting claim the winning position from peg 51 on Lily, using bomb and corn to put 42lb 6oz on the scales.
Paul Davis was second on peg 100 on Long Island, landing 29lb 2oz on bomb and pellet.
This Saturday's open (tomorrow) takes place on the signal pond, with the draw taking place at 9am at the café.
