THE young anglers representing the cadets and juniors recently held a bag-backing fundraising event at Morrisons at Retford.
Fighting the temptation to wag it to the adjacent River Idle at the back of the store for a bit of stick floating, the youngsters stuck to their tasks and raised a creditable £734.36.
Again the success was due in main to the organisational skills of coaches Doreen and Gary Butt and Neil Nicolson of the junior section, who would like to thank all the staff at Morrisons for their kind hospitality and the customers for their generosity.
With the winter weather upon us July may seem a lifetime away, but we have news from Greg Forester this week of the Trevor Ogden memorial match, which will be held on the 18th July 2009 on the field and signal ponds at Lodge Farm.
Although it is over eight months away, over 50 names have been registered and, as this is bound to be a sellout event with entry on a first-come basis, we would urge anyone interested to register at Worksop Angling Supplies, Retford Road, to avoid disappointment.
The cost is £15 all in plus optional pools with plenty of raffle prizes up for grabs, and all the proceeds going to the charity nominated by Trevor's widow.
Greg also informs us that he has the exclusive rights to sell day tickets and members books for the Notts Piscatorial waters on the River Trent at Fiskerton and Rolleston, as well as being able to arrange match bookings via the shop.
A reminder that the annual Guardian open beach match is to be held on 29th November from the Hornsea area, to register or for further information contact Roger at the above number or email address.
The pre-match sign up will take place at the Marine Hotel, Hornsea, between 11am and 12pm, with the fishing from 1pm until 7pm and scales down at 7.30pm.
The event will follow the British Beach Open format with the biggest fish taking the prize and NFSA size limits.
As stated in a previous column, the Holderness beaches are producing the best returns for many years with good cod and whiting catches being reported all along the coast, with the best coming from the areas around Tunstall and Easington.
CLUB RESULTS
THE lovely Christine Allsop, from Dinnington Welfare AC, informs us that the club is on the lookout for new members next season.
The club is well established with a fine history and fish a wide variety of venues, ranging from the River Trent to commercial fisheries. Anyone interested can contact Christine on 01909 518399 or Glyn on 07974 589997.
Their final match of this season took place on the Holme Marsh section of the River Trent, where all the top three employed feeder tactics: 1st Mick Donnelly 9lb 4oz; 2nd Mick Jones 8lb 6oz; 3rd Jimmy Allsop 5lb 8oz.
This victory for Donnelly rounded up a fine season, with him also winning the club's aggregate as well as the knockout trophies.
COMMERCIAL ROUND-UP
WE start this week over at Lakeside Fishery at Ranskill, where the maggot feeder has been proving effective for mixed bags of silver fish in excess of 45lb, from both sides of the lake.
Pole fished pellet is still proving productive for the skimmers and ide in nets over 40lb in the low peg numbers, with unseasonable pole fished meat still making winning appearances on the milder days for skimmer bags approaching 30lb.
With the onset of colder weather the strip ponds have proven to be the places to put your seatbox, with pleasure nets going over 80lb made up of carp, skimmers and ide taken on pole fished pellet on red maggot on the second strip.
On the carp lake Mark Parker landed five specimens which included a fine common of 26lb 4oz from peg 4 using a boilie hook bait, whilst over on the trout lake Dinnington rod Chris Jackson cast his cats whisker on an intermediate line to tempt 18 fish to an impressive 9lb, and Paul Wright slipped his landing net under eight fish to 5lb on various buzzers and floating line.
Retford's Daiwa Hallcroft complex are holding their bonfire night spectacular on the Saturday 8th November and a dual open match will take place with separate categories for carp and silvers, with an entry fee of £20 all in.
After the match in the evening they will be holding a firework display and everybody is welcome with free admittance. The licensed café will be open for drinks and warm food.
On the fishing front, pellet or corn fished on the long pole over a bed of pellet is still the favoured method by the people claiming the brown envelopes in the open matches on both bridge and moat. One tip if you draw on the moat outer – cast over to the island pegs if they are free with a hair rigged corn hook bait.
Pole fished pellet and corn is also reigning supreme at Sherwood Forest Farm Park on the Homedale, Sherwood and Cavendish lakes.
