TO START with we would like to pass on thanks from Neil Nicolson and everybody associated with
the triumphant junior national squads.
They would like to thank Geoff Mawby, of Gateford Angling Supplies, for his generous sponsorship of the two teams that competed in the Under 16 event on the Stainforth and Keadby canal.
Likewise, Garry and Doreen Butt would like to thank Ken Ward's Sports for its ongoing support for the cadets.
Last weekend saw two junior evening events taking place. The first was the Worksop & DAA annual bookholders match, taking place on the Sandhill lakes on the Friday night, where young anglers found a rejuvenated venue producing plenty of fish.
Results were: Under 16s 1st Joel Potts 9lb 8oz skimmers and carp on pole and worm; 2nd Reece Nicholson 4lb 11oz carp and roach pole fished corn or squatt. Under 12s 1st Chelsey Jeffcoate,1lb 13oz; 2nd Tom Allen, 1lb 11oz.
Thanks must go to Garry and Doreen Butt for organising the event and overseeing the proceedings. Thanks also to Kim and Micheal, of Snak Attak, for sponsoring the three-match mini series with £100 of tackle vouchers.
The second event was the final round of the three-match mini series, which this time was held on the John Shaw's stretch of the Chesterfield canal.
The vast majority of the youngsters managed to catch some fish but this was topped by young Tommy Moore who landed 15lb 10oz of mainly chub from peg 121. He also lost a number of proper fish (in his father Ian's words).
Second place went to young starlet Chelsey Jeffcoate, who managed a creditable 6lb 6oz while also managing to lose some quality lumps from peg 91.
Third place went to intermediate Tommy Davenport, who netted bream and tench weighing 4lb 8oz despite losing many eels from peg 97.
The series was fished in good humour and could not have been possible without the support of the town's three local tackle dealers, Lynda and Steve at the Lakeside fishery, John Hunt at Riverside and the Grafton AA for its generous donation of its water.
Also thanks must go to steward Tommy Preen and Neil and Vicky Nicolson for all their time and effort.
In the advanced class Reece Nicholson ran out as the series winner. He was presented with a splendid carry-all donated by Terry Pixley with Joel Potts claiming the runners-up position.
In the novice category, Tommy Moore led the field and won, amongst other prizes, a splendid reel donated by Rob of Disrailies.
Second place went to the fast-improving Lewis Robinson, with Elliot Marris claiming third place.
Tommorow sees the conclusion of a hectic week with an additional event being provided by Lynda and Steve at Lakeside for any youngsters who would like to fish the complex at Ranskill free of charge.
All you have to do to take advantage of this kind offer is register with either of us on the above numbers for an evening's fishing on one of the area's top venues.
An apology from us to our old friend Ian Kettlewell, of Bull Dog Barbers, who contrary to popular belief has not yet reached the age where he can fish the veterans' matches – sorry mate.

Last Sunday saw the members of the Stanley Street Sports and Social AC make the trip to Sherwood Forest farm park, where they opted to fish the Homedale lake.
Reports from our old friend Mick Pogson indicate that the fishing was patchy with some members struggling for bites.
Results were: 1st Steve Royle (56) 56lb 07oz,method feeder corn as hook bait carp up to 8lb; 2nd Ian Mellish (20) 45lb 02oz pole in the margins all carp catch (many lost in the under growth; 3rd Mick Pogson (34) 32lb 15oz carp up to 6lb at 12m all on paste.
A total of 32 anglers took part in the annual Redlands School match, where all the competitors were aged 11 and under.
All but three anglers caught a bit of something over a two-hour stint.
Worksop & District provided the waters with thanks going to John Hayward on liaising with Mr Walker (deputy headteacher) in organising many aspects of the match.
Thanks also to bailiff Jason and his wife Samantha in helping with weighing in after the match.
Results were: 1st Liam Marsh (peg 71) 3lb 2oz pole mixed catch maggot & worm; 2nd Casey Moore (peg 57) 3lb as above; 3rd Lettisha Smith (peg76) 2lb 11oz as above catch included a 1.5lb tench.
The members of British Gas AC visited Royston Waters at North Scarle.
Results were: 1st Alan Hadfield (peg 4) 69lb 10oz Floating biscuit and bread caught well in the later stages of the match carp up to 6lb; 2nd Steve Pogson (peg 3) 64lb 15oz carp up to 6lb at 6m all on paste; 3rd Derek (Bagger) Brown (peg 17) 45lb 7oz same method as runner-up.
The members of Worksop Piscatorials made the hike to Woodland Grange last Sunday where they tackled the Ghost pond.
The majority of the anglers found bites extremely hard to come by. Results were: 1st M. Flinders 12lb 2oz maggot on floating pole; 2nd P. Neil 9lb 13oz; 3rd Ray Houtby 9lb 3oz.
The Hatfield Arms made the pilgrimage to the Holme Marsh section of the River Trent.
Results were: 1st Terry Moroz peg 82 31lb 14oz chub taken on the ground bait feeder cast over to the far bank; 2nd Jeff Clarke peg 80 19lb 2oz barbel on feeder fished pellet; 3rd Mick Donnoley, peg 78 11lb 4oz same method as Clarke.
LAKESIDE ROUND-UPTHE venue's silver fish are still getting their heads down and having a munch with Geoff Bennet employing pole fished meat on peg 13 to put a winning bag of 56lb 14oz on the scales.
Paste is accounting for mixed nets of up to 86lb 11oz with pole fished worm tempting all silver bags in excess of 62lb from peg 19.
On the Carp lake Mark Cocaine landed 12 specimens from peg three on boilie, which was topped by a common of 24lb 4oz. He even managed a roach of 1lb 14oz on his intended carp bait.
Steve Hawkins put his bivvy up on peg one to tempt five fish, the best a common of 27lb 6oz.
Over on the Trout lake fly caster Garry Hunt slipped his landing net under 14 fish which included a personal best rainbow of 10lb 8oz on segmented bloodworm and sinking line.
LODGE FARM ROUND-UPTHE Likely Lads swapped back to the Lily pond on Tuesday and found the fish in an obliging mood.
Results were: 1st Sid Whitehouse peg 58 53lb 12oz pole fished meat; 2nd John Bleakley peg 57 49lb 8oz ground bait feeder with corn hook bait; 3rd Pete Ware peg 54 40lb 1oz, pole and pellet.
Wednesday evening's three-hour match was again fished on the Field pond, where all the main frame fished pole fished paste.
Results were: 1st Richard Jarvis peg 16 66lb 3oz; 2nd Staurt Grey peg 27 64lb 8oz; 3rd Mick Peddle peg 13 47lb 6oz.
Thursday's Veterans' Open was competed for on the Signal pond, where the in-form John Bleakley claimed another frame.
Results were: 1st Reg Turner peg 27 69lb 13oz pole fished meat; 2nd Ian Temple peg 29 69lb 7oz, pole fished meat; 3rd John Bleakley peg 25 49lb 10oz bomb fished corn.
On Sunday Bircotes AC were the visitors to the Lily pond. 1st Mark Hawkes peg 53 58lb 5oz pole fished caster; 2nd Dave Lannaghan peg 50 55lb; 3rd Ken Morton peg 71 39lb 11oz.
The best match weight to fall over the weekend was taken on the Long Island peg 103 where shallow pole fished pellet was the method of choice, with 127lb 1oz gracing the winners net.
Bill informs us that the favoured method on the Top pond is pole fished pellet at eight metres which is tepting the pond's quality skimmers.
RIVERSIDE ROUND-UPA WELCOME return to form on the Match lake at the Scrooby Fishery has been reported.
Pleasure angler Bob Dukes netted over 60lb of carp from peg 20 on the sand martins using pole and pellet.
Results were: 1st Ian Temple peg on 31lb 15oz, all carp on pole fished paste; 2nd Kieth Noble peg six 31lb 8oz short pole and pellet mixed net carp tench and bream; 3rd Paul Glazier peg 32 19lb 15oz all silvers pole fished maggot.
DIAWA HALLCROFT ROUND-UPWEIGHTS in excess of the magic 100lbs continue to fall at the Retford venue, with pellet and paste proving to be the in-form method.
Good alternatives also scoring on the match scene are bomb fished cat meat on Bridge, which is accounting for carp up to 6lb, and meat or corn fished down the margins which are taking skimmers and roach .
On the better days the carp are responding to up in the water methods and Sunday saw the open match won with 86lb 6oz.
