EVEN after all the years we have been doing this column, we are still amazed at the overwhelming generosity of the angling community.
Last Sunday saw the annual fundraiser for the children's ward's Christmas parties, taking place at the Lakeside fishery at Ranskill, where 42 anglers competed to finish in the winning frame, and raise as much cash as possible.
There were respectable weights returned from the majority of the field, but Dave Lawton creamed the opposition with a winning weight of 50lb 6oz, from peg 10.
Just 4oz separated the next two spots, with Daz Godley who weighed 30lb 13oz of silver fish taken on short pole fished maggot from peg 3 on the first strip, squeezing out young Tommy Davenport on the much-fancied peg 37 on the main match lake.
Bob Stott claimed fourth on peg 40 on the match lake, weighing 29lb 7oz, despite breaking two sections of his pole half way through the match.
The whole event was fished in an atmosphere of camaraderie, as anglers from Bassetlaw, Rotherham and Sheffield came together with a common goal of raising as much cash as possible.
As well as the usual raffle, there was an after match auction with drinks hampers, ladies pamper set, fishing tackle, signed footballs from both Sheffield clubs and Rotherham United, and an unusual lot donated by our local MP John Mann, of tea on the terraces of the House of Commons.
The continued generosity of fishery owners Lynda and Steve in donating the pegging fees back to the cause, and the 42 competitors digging deep, brought the total to an incredible £930, which Steve insisted on rounding up to £1,000.
This sum was split in three and donated to the children's wards of Bassetlaw, Rotherham General and Sheffield Children's Hospitals.
The organisers would like to thank Lynda and Steve for donating the waters, Sally Richardson for running the auction, John Mann, Geoff Mawby of Gateford Angling, John Stiff of Top Locks Salon on Central Avenue, Paul Mosgrove of Mosgrove Steel Fabrications, Worksop and District AA, Tommy Spencer for auction and raffle prizes, and all the individual prize donations.

CLUB RESULTS
WORKSOP United's latest permit holders match was held on the club's own length of the Chesterfield Canal: 1st M. Rushton, 6lb-7oz, peg 33; 2nd S. Moore, 5lb-2oz, peg 32; 3rd M. Drage, 5lb, peg 10.
The members of the Pride of Warsop travelled to the Trent on 9th November, where they fished the famous Weirfield section of Holme Marsh: 1st M. Marriot, peg 6, 26lb 8oz; 2nd K. Bacon, peg 7, 20lb 8oz; 3rd D. Gross, peg 3, 10lb 12oz.
Can all members of St Joseph's AC attend the club's AGM and presentation evening tomorrow (Saturday) night at the club at 7pm.

COMMERCIAL ROUND-UP
THE day prior to the aforementioned charity match at the Lakeside fishery, the venue's winter league started.
Langwith's Dennis Burrows took the honors with a net of 54lb 14oz, consisting of carp taken on bomb fished meat and silvers on pole fished pellet from peg 26, with the in-form Dave Lawton claiming the runners up position with a net of silvers weighing 46lb 12oz from peg 32 taken on wag and mag.
Dinnington's Mick Donnelly made up the frame with 43lb 2oz from peg 33 on pole fished pellet and corn.
On the carp lake Lee Millington slipped his landing net under four specimens, topped with a common of 25lb 4oz taken on boilies on peg 5, whilst over on the trout lake Steve Oldfield netted 25 fish to 8lb on a cats whisker or segmented bloodworm on intermediate and sinking lines.
Worksop's Nile Lilley tempted 14 rainbows to 4lb on egg fly, with a sinking line.
Down the road at Lodge Farm, the Likely Lads held their weekly jaunt this Tuesday on the Lily Pond, where Keith Morris proved that he is fighting fit again by winning the event with 43lb 13oz from peg 56 on bomb fished pellet, with Andy Hill not far behind with 37lb 13oz off peg 57 employing bomb fished meat, and Dave Powell making up the frame with 20lb 4oz using the ground bait feeder on peg 67.
Later on in the week, Thursday's invitation was held on the long island where all the main frame opted to fish pole fished pellet and Mark Caudell topped the field with 67lb 15oz from peg 101.

l THE Grafton AA will be holding permit holders matches on their own waters on the Chesterfield Canal starting this Sunday and continuing for the next four weeks.
