Angling club is starting from scratch

It is not often that a fishing club has the opportunity to have a trout lake created from scratch. But Derbyshire County Angling Club is in the process of doing that very thing.

Tarmac Limited are quarrying sand from an area alongside the River Idle, near Retford. The club already owns extensive fishing rights on the Idle, along with a 17-acre trout lake at Sutton. Other UK club waters include 300 acres of lakes and over 25 miles of rivers.

This new lake, at Tiln, is currently being excavated and should be landscaped and ready for fishing by April 2005. The plan is to have a contoured 24-acre lake with bays, clumps of trees and possibly two islands. Club representatives have discussed the design with Tarmac and the resulting project looks like an exciting new venture for the club, which will have a 50-year lease on the lake. Water is still being pumped from the lake to enable work to continue.

The club currently has a few vacancies and can be contacted by visiting derbyshirecountyac.org.uk or by writing to 12 Baker’s Hill, Heage, Belper, Derbyshire DE56 2AL.

Tackle test

I came across some pretty impressive mono at one of Ken Stevenson’s angling course nights, called Repro Powerline, distributed by Prestons Innovations. Just when I think I have seen it all in the Monofilament and Fluorocarbon stakes, another product pops up to take my fancy.

First impressions were that I suspected strength would be compromised in relation to diameter, but that’s not true. This is a super-fine ‘clear’ mono for all your needs if you are looking for something different at the right price. Suitable for all types of angling, the pole angler for instance, can find it useful with the amount of stretch it gives resulting in less bumped-off fish when using heavy elastic. I can recommend it to the game angler also – here we have a great leader material for ‘bugging’, nymphing, and dry fly (in the lower breaking strains). It is soft and supple, allowing good movement with exceptional knot strength.

I gave this Repro a thorough test on the river Derwent below Matlock last Sunday and results show this product is well worth passing on.

Courses Ken Stevenson’s popular angling course is continuing at the Gateford, Worksop on Wednesday from 7pm to 9pm.

Joint Angling Governing Bodies (JAGB) Child Protection and First Aid Workshops are to be held at Sandhill Lake Adventure Base, Worksop, on Sunday 7th March. Further information or application forms from Glyn Williams on 01909 501030.

Prospects

Sherwood Forest Farm Lakes seem to be on top form at the moment so telephone 01623 842617 or 07721 316334 for more information.

On the Cavendish lake, pegs 1-12 are best with nets of roach and skimmers on the pole and waggler. Chopped worm on the pole brings an instant response, but bread punch has been better, a mixture of roach and bream to 2lb. If the bite is slow, try feeding a pot of bread and fish over the top of it.

On the Maunside Lake it has been hectic for local Jeff Hume, fishing three consecutive days at peg 5. Fishing the pole and pellet, he caught carp to 3lb and small barble. He estimated his catch at over 150lb with his best day (Thursday) at over 60lb.

Sherwood Lake is a bite every chuck at the moment with maggot. Lots of small stock carp, perch, roach, and skimmers from pegs 10-30 on the field side, and in the 40s on the roadside.

Also, Worksop and District Anglers Association (WDAA) water at Torksey is still producing some good weights to a variety of methods.

Round-up

A total of 20 fished Holmedale Lake (Sherwood Forest Farm) on Wednesday 11th February. The top six positions were: first – John Darby (Geordie Maggot) 18lb 5oz from peg 49; second – Dave Madin (Sherwood Forest Fishery) 14lb 11oz from peg 17; third – Pete Ellis (Sherwood Forest Fishery) 14lb 4oz from peg 24; fourth – Neil Wilkinson (Geordie Maggot) 10lb 6oz from peg 15; fifth – Craig Brazier (Geordie Maggot) 10lb 5oz from peg 43; sixth – Steve Beard (Sherwood Forest Fishery) 7lb 9oz from peg 26. This Wednesday’s match draw is at 10am, fishing is from 11am to 4pm, £12 all-in, including £100 golden peg for every five pegs.

Groundbait feeder best was best for carp and roach.

Greyhound AC also fished last Sunday at Torksey Arm. This match had anglers who tied for first and fourth places in this exciting first round of a four-match series. Tied first – Steve Armisted 11lb from peg 10 and Wilf Salmon 11lb from peg 12; third – Keith Morris 9lb 12 oz from peg 13; tied fourth – Steve Basset 7lb 4oz from peg four and Martin Watkinson 7lb 4oz from peg six.
