Portland’s Bierton wins eliminator

Portland School’s national championship eliminator - for the event to be held at Mallory Park next Friday - was contested at Bolsover’s Carr Vale Fishery.

The session was hosted by NFA Coach Ken Stevenson, who wishes to thank the Carr Vale staff for their help in organising the competition.
Ken said: “The fishery is small by some anglers’ standards but don’t let this detract anyone from the terrific sport it has to offer.”

Originally there were 30 pegs up for grabs for those who were interested in representing Portland School, but 36 turned up!

Fortunately, everyone got in and it turned out to be a battle of the Nathans.

Nathan Bierton, right, took the honours with a bag of tench and a single carp for 12lb 4oz using feeder and pellet.
The carp weighed in at 8lb 4oz and was then released quickly, a common practice at this fishery for the bigger specimens which are then less stressed.

Runner-up Patrick Goulding used pole and feeder to take 6lb 8oz of carp, but he was plagued by lost fish.

Another Nathan, this time Nathan Parry, used the pole to good effect with 3lb 8oz of small carp for third place.

Adam Watkinson, using pole and feeder, with 2lb 9oz, claimed fourth spot, fifth was Nathan Price with 2lb 4oz using similar tactics.

Drew Raynor took sixth with 2lb 3oz on the pole, seventh Nigel Lee with 2lb Þoz and eighth Rob Stocks with 2lb despite a shocking draw with wind in the face conditions.

He also battled against a very shallow swim no deeper than 2ft and did extremely well where others would probably have struggled to get a bite!
