Taster sessions for angling newcomers

As part of National Fishing week, there is to be an angling taster weekend on the 21st and 22nd August at Barlow Fishery near Chesterfield.
The event is being organized by Anglers Times editor, Kevin Miles - www.anglerstimes.co.uk - and sessions will start at 10am on each day.
The idea is to give anyone who wants to try their hand at fishing the opportunity to do so with NFA instructors Kevin Miles, Ken Stevenson, Carl Bamford and Dave Dorning providing expert advice.
There will be goodie bags and prizes for all the participants, competitions, displays and demonstrations. Refreshments will be available from the on-site snack cabin.
Dave Williams from the East Midlands Carp Study Group will be attending and Jim Baxter from the Sheffield Angling Star will be making an appearance.
Slipstream Design will be demonstrating their latest bait boats, while Custom Bait Supplies will be bringing their designer baits.
Steve ‘Fish Doctor’ Jenkinson will be on hand to answer questions on Koi Keeping and Gaz’s Discount Tackle will be selling tackle at bargain prices on the Saturday.
The event is sponsored by the Environment Agency and the Derbyshire Times.
For more details please phone Barlow Fisheries, Mill Farm, Barlow on 0114 2890543 or visit www.nationalfishingweek.co.uk for more information.
The event will concentrate on coarse fishing for this year, but yours truly will hopefully appear on one of the days to give a fly-casting demonstration.

Prospects

Lakeside at Ranskill’s coarse lake continues to fish well, especially for carp later in the day.
Bridon AC of Retford’s recent match was won by Andy Cordal with 30lb 13oz at peg 1.
Other match weights of over 40lb are needed to make the frame.
A recent four-hour evening competition of Bircotes AC saw member, Phil Morgan win with an impressive 59lb 8oz taken on pole and paste from peg 25.
Mark Johnson of Sheffield had 150lb-plus of carp, tench, roach from peg 1, first strip biggest, including carp of 10lb 10oz fishing pole and pellet.
Again on the Carp Lake, Ian Williams or Derby had three fish to 22lb 10oz (leather) from peg 5 using boilie.
And, on the Trout Lake, Sheffield angler John Harrison had 12 fish to 10lb 3oz on an orange blob, and sinking line had a steady session. Other anglers are doing pretty well using more traditional buzzers on a floater.
