Father beats son in close contest

The magical date of 16th June has just passed which signals, to many anglers, that the season is now properly open.
Thousands of pleasure men and match men will descend on rivers, stillwaters and canals across the country.
The club matchmen will be vying for the previous season’s trophies to adorn their mantelpieces.
And in most competitions you will find strong rivalries among anglers - non more so than father and son locals Ian and Glen Turner.
In last Wednesday’s midweek Go-Baits Open, Ian and his son were clear leaders according to organiser Stewart Goulding.
First it was Glen to weigh in under the watchful eye of his dad. The scales tipped at 42lbs 10ozs and his smile was as big as a Cheshire cat when his dad said: “You got me there son, I can’t beat that!”
So off they went to weigh dad's fish close by and as Ian pulled his net out of the water convinced he was well beaten, Glen stood proud.
At the weigh-in everyone’s eyes were on the dial as the last few fish were added.
Then the scalesman shouted, “Ian Turner, 43 pounds and 1oz!”
The smile soon disappeared and a cool and sympathetic Ian approached his dejected son with his arm around him and said: “Never mind lad, you will beat your dad - one day!” (Glen, I am told, is in his 30's).

Round Up

Worksop and District Angling Association’s Juniors and Cadets shone in the BW Makins Junior Championships, held on Saturday 5th June.
In the match 56 fished and were split into three age groups - under 12s, 13 to 14s and 15 to 16s.
Ben Taylor (under 12s) of WDAA Cadets was third in his age group and fifth overall with 33lb 4oz carp on meat on 5m pole, phase one, lake two.
Matt Godfrey (13 to 14) WDAA juniors won his age group and finished joint second overall with 47lb 12oz of carp on meat and corn at 11m on peg 11, lake four, phase one.
The overall match winner was 56lb and came from the 15 to 16s age group on lake two, phase one.
WDAA cadet Luke Stables has also had some success by qualifying for the Browning Youth Challenge final.
Luke came third overall in the qualifier at Hayfield Lakes on 2nd June.
In the WDAA Annual OAP match at Hallcroft Fisheries on Saturday 12th June, 66 anglers took part and although the weather was breezy and overcast, all had a good day with the competition deemed a great success.
Prior to the presentation, competitors tucked into an after match meal of pie, chips and peas which as usual went down very well.
The weights are improving each year and top honours went to Brian Grundy of Worksop Piscatorials who fished short pole with caster for his catch of 33lbs.
The first six positions were as follows: First - B. Grundy 33lbs, second - D. Senior 25lbs 11oz, third - J. Brookes 25lbs 4oz, fourth - T. Evans (last years winner) 24lbs 4oz, fifth - A. Brumpton 21lbs 2oz and sixth - W. Salmon 18lbs 2oz.
Apart from the section on the island, double figure weights took all section places. The executive committee would like to thank Brian Talbot and his staff at Hallcroft, Janet, Steve and the catering staff, raffle donations from Bircotes AA, Mick Pogson (association president), Richard Kirkham of Stanley Street Sports and Social and finally Steve and Janet who donated a lucky (nearest the weight) prize.
The next OAP match is the Bassetlaw Festival match due to take place on Tuesday 13th July 2004 at Sandhill Lake Worksop. Tickets cost £5. For further information or tickets contact Mick Pogson on 01909 486893.
