Unusual
catch
I received
an Environment Agency magazine where they reported a fish rescue at Drakelow
power station in Staffordshire near Burton on Trent.
Roach, Bream, Chub, you name it were electro fished-out from beneath the
cooling towers and returned to the nearby river Trent.
Right, how many of you thought someone was pulling your leg about the
ones reported at Cottam?
You have been warned
It came as no surprise to me that some anglers were concerned with the
list the other week taken directly from a saboteur website.
A good laugh was mostly the comment but one or two actually
thought that I was encouraging these actions by divulging the tactics
gathered from this website.
I was quite disappointed to hear a key member of the local angling community
was one of the critics. If people want to bury their heads in the sand
like this individual, where would we be?
The reason to print the list was to educate and, I must admit, amuse.
It worries me that some probably dont give a damn about the practices
of such groups.
Ton-up
haul
Worksop angler Bret
Northage and his son, future starlet Bret Jnr, have secretly been enjoying
some tremendous pleasure fishing, with carp as the target species.
A 95-mile journey to Boddinton Reservoir near Daventry in Worstershire
is the place where he and his sibling have caught fish between 5lb and
6lb in bags of up to 150lb!
If we had stuck at it we could have easily gone over the 200lb mark,
said Bret.
His main tactic was pole, or feeder with cat meat as bait. On a recent
trip he had 33 carp to the net and lost 11 more while playing them up.
I asked Bret about the cost for a day ticket, his reply was that he didnt
know, as no-one had bothered to approach him for any type of payment yet!
In the meantime, he, and a few other Worksop anglers, are about to descend
on this reservoir to fish a friendly match this week, appetites whetted
with the possibility of a double ton.
I look forward to the result and perhaps a picture or two?
Lakeside
Ranskill
I am planning a visit
to Lakeside next week to put my new 14-metre Maver Concept pole through
its paces with the carp and rudd which are committing suicide there.
On Friday last, I sat watching Worksop angler Dave Allison take a few
fish on the trout lake and then ventured over to the first strip pond
where a chap was catching largish rudd cast after cast on sweetcorn.
Another angler was missing more than he caught as the bites were pretty
quick, so, you had to be on your toes with your strike speed.
Which brings to mind a time on the canal at Bracebridge where Stuart Coupe
and I stood behind an angler watching him winkle the odd one out.
As his float quickly dipped under, the angler cursed his missed fish.
On that, Stuart said Are your eyes painted on? referring to
his slowness in spotting the bite. I couldnt help but chuckle at
his humour.
Fantastic
Response
I have been overwhelmed
with offers of help from people who are interested in a North Notts Angling
Fair to be held in October of this year.
There are now four nominated charities that will benefit from this years
event and the organisers still want to hear from any others who may wish
to benefit.
Plans are being made to accommodate up to 60 trade stands including demonstration
areas and theatres.
I am contacting course and game angling celebrities from all around the
UK to attend in my attempt to help out.
Co-event organisers Tracey Dyson and Julie Overend said: We shall
hopefully gain valuable funds for many worthwhile causes but we still
have room for one or two more charities.
There is quite a lot of hard work to do between now and Saturday
16th of October and we are still in the process of setting everything
up. We are grateful to everyone who is involved.
