Date lined up for town angling fair

A date has finally been fixed for the Angling Fair to be held at the Bassetlaw Centre Eastgate, Worksop - Saturday 16th October.
Plans are being made to invite top stars in our sport (coarse and game) from the world and European stage and more locally.
This is something our area has been crying out for, and is now going to take place.
There will be trade stands, exhibitions and demonstrations to keep the whole family entertained.
All proceeds will go to charity and the organisers are interested in any worthwhile causes who would like to get in touch - please contact me and I will forward on your details.
In the meantime, I would like to hear from any local anglers and clubs who would like to volunteer as helpers.
I will keep everyone up-to-date on this event. Keep the date in your diaries and watch this space.
For those of you who cannot wait until October, let me remind you of next month’s wonderful Chatsworth Angling Fair.

Chatsworth Angling Fair

This year’s event is on Saturday and Sunday, 22nd and 23rd May,
Stars of our sport (some who will be invited to attend the North Notts Angling Fair) are helping to celebrate Chatsworth Angling Fair’s Silver Jubilee.
They will include John Wilson, well-known worldwide for his immensely popular TV programmes on angling.
In front of the crowds in the coarse fishing grandstand, he hopes to catch chub from the River Derwent, which runs through the show grounds.
Among others taking part in next month’s fair - held on the Chatsworth House estate near Bakewell, Derbyshire - will be Bob Nudd, four times world match champion, who will demonstrate pole fishing; top carp ace Chris Ball; last year’s Pike Angler of the Year Colin Goodge; Austrian-born Günter Feuerstein, recognised world-wide as one of continental Europe’s most skilled and innovative fly-casters; three outstanding European fly-tyers, Skuli Kristinsson from Iceland, Jens Pilgaard (Denmark), and Bart Reitsma (the Netherlands).
For sea anglers, it is expected that those offering demonstrations and tuition in surf-casting - some of them able to cast up to an awesome length of 300 metres - will include members of the England team who won the international casting championships in Italy last September.
“As shown by this wide range of interests,” said organiser Christopher Lloyd Owen, “one of the great strengths of the Chatsworth Angling Fair is that we cater for all aspects of the sport - and not only in the demonstrations.“
“The trade exhibitors, too, display fishing tackle that meets every conceivable need.”
“We have established that Chatsworth is the largest outdoor event of its kind in the world. There are others which are bigger overall, of course, but they are either under cover or have angling as only part of their features.”
“Ours is the only open-air fair of its size, which is devoted solely to angling. “
“Another of Chatsworth’s unique aspects is that, as shown by John Wilson's hope of landing chub there, the demonstrators perform on live waters.”
As further enhancement of the Silver Jubilee celebrations, the organisers are putting renewed emphasis on the fair as a family day out - with plenty to interest all members, even if they are not anglers.
Besides meal tents, fish cookery demonstrations and a bandstand, there is even a bouncy castle within the showgrounds to enable the youngsters to let off steam.
Other attractions to entertain non-anglers are only a few minutes' walk from the fair - such as tours of Chatsworth House and its fabulous 105-acre gardens and maze, together with farmyard and adventure playground.
The fair is open from 8am to 4.30pm daily. Entrance is £8 on the day, but only £7 for applications received by not later than 14th May. Coach parties of 30 or more can also obtain a 20 per cent discount.
Children aged 14 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Car parking is also free.
For early applications, cheques should be made out to Chatsworth Angling Fair and sent with an sae to: Christopher Lloyd Owen, The Country Fair Office, Litcham Farm House, King's Lynn PE32 2PB.

Prospects

There are some exceptional catches still being taken at Lakeside Fishery just up the road.
The recent R and R Sports Spring League match on Sunday 18th April was won with over 40lbs of silver fish including a Carp of 6lbs.
The backing weights were just as good in the same match with second, third and fourth having over 30lb each. Pole and pellet were best.

A pleasure catch by Harworth anglers Terry Foster and Sam Riley topped 150lb last Thursday, consisting of chub and silver fish using wasp-grub in conjunction with the pole.
On Monday, a Sheffield angler had over 100lb of carp to 10lb from peg one on the first strip pond using pole and cat meat.
Matt Linstead of Mexborough caught the biggest fish of the season so far, a 30lb 2oz common from peg four using a pop-up boilie in the margin.
Gavin Oskinski of Mansfield had eight carp to 18lb from peg six using the same bait.
On the Trout Lake, massive catches are being recorded with many fish into double figures using a variety of methods. Telephone 01777 818524 for more details.

Round-up

Go Baits’ open match last Sunday saw 32 anglers fishing in weather that was, as usual, wet and cold!
Mark Turner, who has previously finished in third and fourth in this competition finally took the honours with four bream and a single tench bag for 19lb 12oz from peg five. He used a groundbait feeder set-up and either red maggot or worm as bait on fine tackle.
Paul Unwin was runner-up with an all bream bag of 14lb 7oz using similar tactics from peg 10
Third place went to Paul Madley (6lb 1oz, peg 48) and fourth was Pete O’Donovan (5lb 12oz, peg 92).
