Chance to join county’s top club

Almost 50 years ago I joined a small angling club in Derbyshire that had only one venue to offer its members and charged a very modest annual fee.
In the ensuing years, under the guidance of the late Owen Handley, the club gradually built up a very enviable list of fisheries for the members, leasing some waters and buying others until it became one of the best in the country, and certainly the best in Derbyshire.
Membership levels rose and so did fees, of course, but year by year membership becomes an even bigger bargain.
And unlike the early days there is no longer a waiting list for joining because a few more members would help build up reserves of cash to further exend the list of waters available.
The club offers coarse and game fishing on a vast range of stillwaters (large and small) and running water too.
The stillwaters include access to four big reservoirs for trout, and trout and grayling sport on various lengths of the Derwent, Dove and Manifold, and lower Derwent and Idle for coarse fish.
One mixed fishery is the best grayling water in the county.
There is also river fishing in Scotland for salmon and sea trout.
It is called the Derbyshire County Angling Club and winter get-together for talks are held. David Holmes is the general secretary and he can be contacted at 12 Bakers Hill, Heage, Nr Belper, Derbyshire. Telephone 07790 825347 or (01773) 856562.
Annual subs are £195 with a first-year joining fee of £255.
Meanwhile, the 300-peg annual breast-cancer charity match held at Lindhome Lakes, Doncaster, has got even bigger!
The new Oasis Lake opening on the complex, means a total of 375 anglers can now be accommodated in this match, to be held on Wednesday, May 21.
Any anglers who would like test their abilities against the professionals should contact event organser Kevin Allen as soon as possible. For further details please visit www.thebigbash.co.uk or call (01724) 855211, email silver.s@btinternet.com.
