Tackle has never been so cheap

If you have not been fishing for very long and you go into a sizeable fishing tackle shop you cannot help but be amazed at the vast array of gadgets that are on sale now.
Mostly reasonable in price the gadgets that are supposed to help you to fish effectively vary greatly in usefulness, and you can spend a fortune if you cannot resist buying lots of ingenious bits and pieces.
However, some of the modern items of tackle really are well worth buying and they are sometimes the cheapest tackle items too.
If I was asked to name the two most useful tackle items that have appeared in the shops recently I would unhesitatingly chose ‘Slammo’ disgorgers in the coarse fishing sphere, and large arbour reels for fly fishing.
Even with barbless hooks for coarse fishing it sometimes happens that the hook is in an awkward place in the mouth of the fish and a disgorger is needed.
Slammo disgorgers are foolproof and kinder to the fish and when slid down the line near the hook they hardly ever fail to engage with the hook properly.
By the way, do please avoid touching a fish with dry hands.
For a great many years nearly all reels sold for fly fishing were of a silly, inefficient design. They had the line wound onto very narrow spindles which meant that a great deal of uneccessary backing line was needed to fill the spool. Worse still these reels caused fly lines to twist and tangle and winding in the line took ages. The early large arbour fly reels were very expensive and sometimes of poor design.
Some still cost the earth, but there are lots of quite cheap large arbour fly reels on sale now at very reasonable prices.
Sometimes this is due to the habit prevalent now of advertising goods at discount prices, often at half price in fact.
If you are gullible enough to be taken in by such claims you do not deserve sympathy, but it is certainly true that in terms of value for money decent quality fishing tackle has never been so cheap.
