Eight trout waters worth trying

Though Derbyshire is perhaps best known for its magnificent trout rivers, we also need envy nobody where stillwater trout fly fisheries are concerned for we have at least eight such venues.
Alton Manor Farm at Idridgehay on the extreme upper reaches of the little river Ecclesbourne offers secluded fishing and a good change of success. Telephone (01629) 822318.
The fishery at Mill Farm in Barlow has four trout lakes as well as coarse fishing and a trout brook in a lovely valley. Telephone (01142) 890543.
The Donkhill Fishery near Catton is very peaceful but needs a good walk from the farm to the lake. Excellent sport here. Telephone (01827) 383296.
Press Manor Fishery on Birkin Lane near Chesterfield has a carp lake and a coarse lake plus a sizeable trout lake, well stocked and with a boat for hire if bank fishing is not your scene. A very varied fly like here. Telephone (07976) 306073.
The Yeaveley Estate has a small trout lake in a very quiet surroundings and with an excellent stock of trout. Telephone (01335) 330247.
Then we have three trout reserviors. My favourtie Ladybower offers the cheapest fishing on any English trout reservoir and in marvellous scenery with good boats. Telephone (01433) 651254.
Carsington is the most recently constructed. It is big, and boat fishing can be enjoyable, though bank fishing is limited to only a few areas. Telephone (01629) 540769.
Finally Foremark reservoir near Milton changed hands last season and has provided me with excellent sport including some big trout over the years. Bank or boats. Telephone (01283) 703202.
How nice would it be to get on the phone to make bookings and then fish all these waters during a week’s holiday. Think of it.
A week by the waterside instead of that awful four-letter word ‘work!’
