Permits represent a bargain

From a very early age I enjoyed trips to fish the Chesterfield and Stockwith canal in the Retford area, and by the age of 12 I had learned to fly fish for chub on that water.
I was still enjoying this fishing until recently and it is better than ever. Catching chub there on buzzy dry flies is great sport.
Then in my early twenties I started fishing the river Idle where it flows close to Retford and not far from the canal.
The roach fishing in winter was superb and I was very pleased to have been invited to join a small club run by the late Tag Barnes which gave me access to that river fishing.
Today the huge shoals of big roach are less likely to be found but good chub and perch, and even barbel afford excitement.
My reason for telling you all this is that also in my 20s (some 50-odd years ago) I joined the Derbyshire County Angling Club run then by late Owen Handley.
Over many years of membership the club’s list of fisheries on both stillwaters and rivers for all manner of fish both game and coarse.
Now the fishing on the canal has been taken over by Derbyshire County Angling Club, and the length of the river Idle has been held by the same big club for some years too.
While getting membership of the DCAC is well worth while non-members are able to buy season tickets for the canal and the river fishing on the Idle.
What a bargain these permits are. You can have a canal permit for a mere £18 a season, and a river permit at the same £18, or a double permit for both river and canal at £30.
The canal has recently been stocked with tench and bream and rudd and clubs can book matches on these waters too.
Applications for the permits must go to: Mr Ron Trevis, The Homestead, Sutton Lane, Sutton Scarsdale, Nr. Chesterfield, S54 5UP.
Send a SAE and a cheque or postal order made out to Derbyshire County Angling Club, and a good quality passport sized photograph too.
I consider all the permits mentioned to be astonishing bargains.
