Embassy match is closely contested

Whitwell Common angler Alex Mitchell was one of six local anglers that took part in the two-day Embassy Pairs Challenge Final.

It was staged on the Roba roja and Flix sections of the River Ebro in Spain and with his partner Rich Wilson (Sheffield) secured 15th overall place with 48 points.

On day one, Wilson, a member of Daiwa Trentmen, was seventh in his section at Roba roja with 19.50kgs (42lb 15oz).

Alex (Maver Barnsley Blacks) was ninth in his section at Flix with 6.88kgs (15lb 2oz) that earned them 26 points and put them on the fringe of the prize money in overall ninth place.

On day two Wilson again enjoyed a good day as he was sixth at Flix with 27.82kgs (61lb 3oz) while Alex was 14th from the other section with 5.520kg (12lb 3oz).

That gave them 22 more points to place them 16th on the day but leaving them in 15th place overall.

Worksop resident Stuart Gray and his son-in-law Christopher Eves finished in mid table in 20th place on 43 points.

On day one Stuart was pegged on the Riba roja section where he took 15th place with 8.860 kgs (19lb 8oz) while Christopher was eighth in his section at Flix with 9.540kgs (20lb 15oz).

That gave them 19 points and 26th overall place after the first day. On day two Stuart was fishing at Flix where he secured seventh place overall out of 80 anglers with a fine carp net of 25.360kgs (55lb 13oz) while Christopher fishing at Riba roja was 11th with 8.34kg (18lb 6oz).

They finished in overall 13th place on day two with 24 points and moved them up to their final position of 20th.

Todwick angler Kevin Vickers secured sixth individual place on day one with 49.04kgs (107lb 14oz).
The other two local anglers, namely Andrew Pickersgill and Gordon Smith, unfortunately came home without any major reward other than having caught some quality fish. They all appear to have had an absolutely brilliant time out in Spain where the temperatures rose to an incredible 111 degrees.
