Worksop
well reresented in Spanish Bonanza
ONE hundred
anglers recently met on the banks of the Fossdyke Navigation Canal in
Lincolnshire in anticipation of securing the final placing for the Embassy
Pairs challenge in Spain next year.
This was the
ultimate event of the 20 qualifying competitions organised over the past
six months by the NFA, with a total of 4,000 anglers having taken part.
The Fossdyke Canal is reputably the oldest canal in the country and provides
free pleasure fishing to all WDAA book holders on a waterway stretching
from the associations Trent waters at Torksey Lock through to Lincolns
Brayford Wharf.
The 100 peg event was originally due to take place in the upper reaches,
from Woodcocks towards the Pyewipe Inn section, but was declared unfishable
because of excessive floodwater.
Organisers moved the pegs to the lower regions from the Bridge Inn at
Saxilby back towards Drinsey Knook.
The decision proved a success with the top three pairs recording 90 points,
and most anglers
catching fish despite the atrocious conditions.
Lincolns Paul Andrews and Alan Houlton (Lincs. County, Southend
Angling) took the top pairs
position with a combined weight of 15lb 1oz, followed by Steve Hemingray
and Bradley Titmus (Daiwa Dorking) with 9lb 15oz. Individual winner was
Steve Canty of Goole with 13lb 7oz. Steve alternated between the pole
at mid distance and the groundbait feeder method tight across at a peg
near to the
Doddington Road end outlet where he managed to locate some of the resident
bream known to be in that area.
The 40 qualifying pairs win an all-expenses paid trip to the gala final
in Spain in May of next year.
Worksop father and son in law pairing Stuart Gray and Chris Eves qualified
in the seventh event staged at Hallcroft Fisheries, and then Gordan Smith
(Worksop National Squad) with Andrew Pickersgill (Angling Supplies) qualified
in the 15th event on the Erewash Canal, along with Alex Mitchell (Maver
Barnsley) from Whitwell Common, who with his partner Rich Wilson (Daiwa
Trentmen) also qualified in the same Erewash Canal match.
The finalists will fly from Stansted to Reus Airport in Spain for the
two-day final held on the River Ebro which is known to be home to catfish
in excess of 300lbs. We wish them the best of luck for the final, accompanied
with a personal piece of advice, lads - dont bother with the size
26 hooks tied to 12oz hook lengths.
