Casting my line for the final time

It is with a feeling of great sadness that I wish to inform all readers that I have decided to relinquish my position as angling correspondent for the Worksop Guardian.

This decision has not been taken lightly but after a great deal of soul searching and deliberation, my personal health, family and full-time employment have become my immediate priorities.

I took over the role in 1992 after the sad demise of former correspondent Gerald Rollinson, who died suddenly within a matter of just a few weeks of being appointed the President of the National Federation of Anglers.

Since then I have published over 620 weekly reports having only missed three reports during this lengthy period of time.

I have really enjoyed compiling this weekly publication which has proved to be very popular within the Bassetlaw region.

I have made many friends over the years through telephone discussions as well as individuals coming to my door to pass on any interesting items of information for inclusion in the reports.

It is surprising just how many people (many of whom are not even anglers) who have recognised me and stopped me in the street to congratulate me on the content and variety of my reports.

I will certainly miss the camaraderie that exists between the subscribers to the column including club secretaries, outside organisations and individual members of the general public – so many thanks to everyone who has supported me.

My ultimate report will be published in the Christmas week issue of the Worksop Guardian, so if there are any individuals wishing take over my role as angling correspondent then please contact Guardian sports editor Matt Halfpenny on 01909 543012 for further information on what the job entails.

Fossdyke for Sale

The 11-mile section of the Fossdyke Navigation Canal is up for sale with a 737 lease and will be auctioned off in London on 4th December.

This is a complicated financial story and the outcome should not affect the fishing or boating rights on the canal which meanders from Torksey Lock where the River Trent meets the canal and runs all the way into Brayford Wharf in the middle of Lincoln.

The canal is currently let to British Waterways who are responsible for managing the canal and they have a lease until 2740.

The new buyers will not be able to do anything with the canal other than to use it as an investment to receive a guaranteed income of rents of around £9,500 per year for the next 737 years.

Those who may be interested in purchasing this picturesque part of English heritage will be expected to pay around £150,000 to secure the purchase.

For more information relating to the auction telephone 0207 4376977.

Santa's Special

The Chesterfield Canal Trust is once again making arrangements for the Norwood Packet Santa Special to run cruises along the Chesterfield Canal every Saturday and Sunday from 11am each day, starting on Saturday 29th November right through to Sunday 21st December.

The cruises will leave the Lock Keeper Inn, Worksop by-pass and return after a 45 minute cruise.
At 10am on the 29th November Bassetlaw MP John Mann and the Bassetlaw Party Chairman will be guests of honour on the inaugural trip.

Children will have the opportunity to meet Santa, with each child receiving a present, and adults will receive a glass of sherry and a mince pie.

The prices are £3 for adults and £2.50 for children and a small deposit is required when booking. For further details call Jim on 01246 271923 (evenings only).
