Safeguarding the future of our sport

With Christmas beckoning I feel certain that there will be some readers of the column hoping that they will find a selection of new fishing tackle in their Christmas stockings.

It is a well-known fact that in the past I have gone on record as stating that in and around Worksop we have the four best, and most generous, fishing tackle shop proprietors in the country.

So, if you want to give other members of your family a gentle hint as to what you would like for Christmas, draw their attention to a group of local businessmen who I can best describe as my kind of people.

For many years now Mick Pridmore of Angling Supplies (Retford Road), Geoff Mawby of Gateford Angling Supplies (Gateford Road), Stewart Goulding of Go Baits (Langold), and Ken Ward of Ken Ward Sports (Carlton Road) have continued to support myself and other hard working individuals in our efforts of promoting junior angling throughout the Bassetlaw region, and to safeguard the future of our sport.

In my opinion, all four of these tackle shop proprietors deserve a medal as big as the proverbial dustbin lid in return for their support to local associations, clubs and many individual anglers.

Over the last decade nothing has been too much trouble for them when it comes to putting their shoulder to the wheel when junior match organisers, like Garry Butt and I, are looking for sponsorship for our competitions.

These guys have never failed to come up with the goods when approached to encourage the young anglers.

I appreciate and accept that these four individuals are obviously in business to make money.

However we must be fair to them, because they don't have to be as generous as they have been – yet to their credit, they all continue to support both junior and senior angling events arranged on our local waters.

So to show our appreciation and give something back to a great bunch of guys – my Christmas message to all of our readers is support your local tackle shops, they all deserve your custom.

I can assure everyone that you will not be disappointed with the quality of the goods provided by top quality shops - at affordable prices in a relaxed and jovial atmosphere.

I personally wish to extend to the four of them and their staff a sincere thank you for their support, and wish them all the very best for the festive season and good health for 2003.
