Lee's
day to remember
Lee Watkinson,
of Worksop, experienced a day to remember while fishing on Sandhill Lake
last week.
Under the guidance of Mick Burrell, a National Federation of Anglers (NFA)
qualified coach, the 12-year old caught a total of 66 fish, comprising
of carp, gudgeon roach, rudd, and skimmers that were all caught on the
waggler method using either big maggot or pinkie from peg 25.
A delighted Lee expressed his sincere thanks to Mick Burrell for his patience
and understanding during the four hour session that was organised by courtesy
of Worksop and District Anglers Association who sponsor the towns
three local NFA coaches, namely Mick Burrell, Ken Stevenson and yours
truly.
The activity was also supported by Sporting Chance of the Bassetlaw Councils
Sports Development Unit.
At the conclusion of the session Lee's parting shot was: When can
we do it again? It's been a great day and I've learned a lot.
I know how to plumb my depth, how to cast accurately, why I need
to sink my line after casting, when and how much to feed, how to strike
into fish properly, how to swing small fish to hand, how and when to net
fish, how to handle them safely and how to identify different species
of fish.
Although I didn't catch a perch, Mick showed me how to handle one
with care because of the spiky fin they have on their back, so I will
remember his advice when I do catch one.
I did not want to stop, I would have been there until dark if they
had let me. My mates will not believe me when I tell them how many fish
I caught, but they will have to, once they see my picture in the paper.
Mick was great, he really knows his stuff.
Horseshoe
Fishery
David
and Marilyn Hull, the owners of Horseshoe Fishery at Wales, near Kiveton,
welcome junior anglers to their lovely 20 peg fishery and have entered
into an arrangement with the sports governing body, the National Federation
of Anglers, offering their facilities as and when required for junior
coaching sessions.
However, they have asked me to emphasise that during ordinary pleasure
sessions youngsters under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult
whilst fishing the complex.
They said: While we want to be seen to be encouraging youngsters
to take up the sport, we do not want the fishery to become a nursery or
creche where parents drop their kids off on their way to work and then
pick them up at the end of the day.
As an individual, I support David and Marilyn wholeheartedly on this very
important decision based purely on a safety point of view. It is a well
known fact that young anglers concentration levels are very minimal,
unless they are of a special breed of youngster who keep themselves occupied
even at times when they are not catching fish.
In most cases, after half an hour or so the majority of kids get itchy
feet and start looking for other things to do. They have a tendency to
leave their baited float in the water unattended and wander off to start
messing about around the location where they are fishing.
This could lead to serious injury or even worse, in some cases youngsters
have been known to drown while out on fishing sessions.
David and Marilyn want to be seen to be encouraging the kids for the right
reasons not becoming a free baby-sitting service for the day.
Local senior anglers may be interested to note that the venue is currently
producing some excellent weights with some club matches experiencing double
figure catches. Further details are obtainable from Dave or Marilyn on
