Licence fees set for increase next year

The Environment Agency (EA) has made a public announcement that they intend increasing rod licences next year.

In a recent press release - and in pursuance to Section 25 and Schedule 2 of the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act 1975 - the EA have given notice that they intend fixing new fishing licence duties, which will have effect throughout the agency’s area of jurisdiction.

It is intended that the duties will come into force on the 1st April 2004.

The information received on the changes is summarised below.
Target - Rod and line.
Licence period - For a period of 12 months with effect from 1st April 2004.
Area - All waters within the fisheries jurisdiction of the Environment Agency.
Duty - (i) non-migratory trout, char, freshwater fish (coarse fish) and eels. Full annual charge: £23, concessionary charge £11.50, junior charge £5.00

(2) The concessionary charge will apply to (a) persons aged 65 years or older, (b) persons on receipt of: (i) long term incapacity benefit, (ii) short term incapacity benefit (at the higher rate), (iii) severe disablement allowance, (iv) war pension which includes unemployable supplement.

Warning -- A rod licence allows use of up to two rods at the same time when pleasure fishing for freshwater fish and eels, subject to local byelaws.
A rod licence does not allow the holder to fish anywhere in England and Wales - you must obtain permission from the landowners or clubs and associations who may lease the waters, for which there may be day tickets available.

Buyers Beware

One of the country’s largest coarse fish suppliers has fallen foul of the Environment Agency section 30 rules and regulations.
It was discovered trying to supply crucian carp to a fishery without the required documentation.
A recent press release revealed that Suffolk-based Framlingham Fisheries boss Tim Watts was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay £1,800 in costs after he was caught by officers from the Environment Agency with 200 carp.
It appears that the fish were scheduled to be placed in a fishery around the Thetford area of Norfolk until the EA intervened.
Their officers had obviously been pre-warned about the intended fish re-stocking and were strategically placed on the arrival of the fish.
When they confronted the co-owner of Framlingham fisheries about the appropriate consent forms, he claimed that he had forgotten about them, neither could he inform the EA representatives as to where the fish had originated.
Local clubs or associations who intend purchasing fish to re-stock their waters are strongly advised to follow the section 30 ruling which also requires health check certificates for the fish that are being purchased.
Advice on fish re-stocking can be obtained from your local Environment Agency office at West Bridgford in Nottingham.

Hallcroft is up for Sale

After weeks of speculation about Moorland’s Fishery in Worcester being put on the market, it has now been disclosed that its sister fishery at Hallcroft near Retford is also up for sale.
It is expected that the very popular fishery, which has four lakes that can facilitate up to 450 pegs, a static caravan park, toilet block, a cafeteria and tackle shop on site is expected to be sold for around the £1.5 million mark.
