Lee’s dad in the spotlight

Lee Westwood, of Worksop, is well known for his golfing success all over the world.

However, not many readers of this column will be aware that his father John is an accomplished angler with some of his own records to boast about.

John is a a former team manager of Worksop juniors and also the former team manager of the Valley School who still have one of the best records of successes in the history of this competition.

When he gets the opportunity he still manages to try a spot of specimen fishing and one of his favourite locations at the moment is the Wensum Valley Golf and Country club which is located at the side of the River Wensum in Norfolk.

His latest session proved highly successful during which he caught a chub weighing 6lb 14oz (above) that was taken on ledgered bread flake fished over small amounts of regular deposits of mashed bread mixed with a lot of hemp. He cast his baited line to the side of a willow tree and allowed the current to take the bomb under the tree.

When it was first weighed, immediately after its capture, it took the scales past the 7lbs mark. However, by the time the owner arrived to witness the fish it weighed in at 6lbs 14 oz, during the session John caught several other fish running to 5lbs 14oz.

John informs me that a roving method is the best approach at this particular location.

The fish must like having its photograph taken because the owner commented that John Wilson (of angling television fame) had caught the same fish – easily recognisable by the distinctive mark on its back – on a previous occasion, a year earlier when it weighed just over 6lbs.

John Westwood has now had over 60 chub in excess of 5lbs from this water in 10 visits, three of these were over 6lbs in weight.

Anyone who enjoys a game of golf as well as a spot of fishing should give the venue a try. There are quite a few pike, trout and barbel resident in the water which is open only to residents of the hotel. John thinks that this information may be of use to some of our readers.
