Portland clinch a silver in nationals

Portland student Patrick Goulding of Langold has won the coveted title of National Schools Champion for the second time in three years.

He also captained his team to the silver medal position in the prestigious Championships that took place at the Glebe Fishery, Mallory Park in Leicestershire.

The 15-year-old, who is a member of the Worksop Junior squad, won the event with a weight of 28lb 10oz comprising of carp that were caught in windy conditions at 9 to 10 metres using chopped worm and caster presented on a size 14 hook tied direct to 5lb line.

It means that Patrick has won the coveted title for the second time in three years, having taken the honours in 2001 with a championship record weight of 64lb 13oz.

New squad member Nathan Price took the individual silver medal with 23lb 8oz of carp that were caught in the last 45 minutes of the match which was his first major competition.

To complete the success story, Jason Goulding, younger brother of Patrick, secured the silver medal in the under 14s section to make it a day to remember for the Worksop-based school pupils.
Other squad members who helped them secure the team silver trophy were: Lee Temperal 13lb 11oz, Shaun Rampling 6lb 12oz, Nathan Parry 5lb 1oz, James Holland 3lb 9oz, Chris Watkinson 1lb 9oz.

The squad – who form part of an ‘extra curricular' angling activity group that is delivered by local National Federation of Anglers qualified coaches Ken Stevenson and Mick Burrell – fished extremely well during the event and thoroughly deserved their rewards.

Portland headteacher, Paul Buck, said: “This is brilliant news, not just for the students who took part but for the school in general.”
“They really have done us proud and their trophies will now take pride of place in the school’s display cabinet.”
“Since the angling activity group was started three years ago by Glyn Williams and Ken Stevenson we have gone from strength to strength.
“To win overall individual gold and silver medals, team silver and individual silver in the under 14s section is beyond belief.”
“I cannot thank Ken Stevenson and Mick Burrell enough for what they have achieved in such a short period of time with this years group, the NFA coaches are a brilliant set of guys who deserve all the credit that they get.”

As an added bonus for the region a team of committed parents of some Valley School pupils – under the leadership of Lorraine Smith – managed to get a team registered for the competition despite the fact that the squad was only finalised on the Monday before the competition took place on the Friday.

They came home with the team bronze trophy after finishing in third place, just one point behind the Portland squad.

The team comprised of Mark Smith, Adam Wilde, Ashley Nicolson, Jordan Webster, Simon Bolton, Anthony Richardson, Adam Bellamy, and Sam Raisebeck.
