Cadets take gold in regional event

Worksop once again had a successful NFA East Midland Regional Championships, this time held on home waters on the Chesterfield Canal.

The match took place last Saturday courtesy of the Grafton Angling Association and in conjunction with Worksop and District Anglers Association (WDDA).

On the day, 66 of the best junior anglers from the region lined the banks on the Garside Street and Lock Keeper to Rhodesia sections.

It proved a difficult day for the local teams. But it did not stop the cadet squad winning five of their six sections to secure team gold, as well as individual silver and bronze medals.

In the intermediate section they secured team silver and team bronze plus the individual team silver medal. Unfortunately, on this occasion, the junior squad came away with nothing.

In the overall match positions, Worksop’s Brian Searle (intermediates) took the individual silver medal with 7lb 13oz from peg 161.

The event itself was dominated by the squads from Derby who took most of the major medals.
Former Fish O’ Mania champion – Worksop’s Ian Turner – was guest of honour at the formal presentation at the Innings and he handed over the trophies.

Brian Turner, the NFA representative extended a vote of thanks to the Grafton Angling Association for allowing them the use of their facilities.

He also praised the WDDA for organising and hosting the event, the stewards and the management and staff of the Innings.

The full results are as follows: Intermediates: Team – Derby (15 points), Worksop and District A (12), Worksop and District B (7). Individual – winner was Mark Williams (Derby) 10lb 6oz from peg 160, runner-up Brian Searle (Worksop A) 7lb 13oz (p161) followed by Robert Aldred (Derby 6lb p148.
Juniors: Team – Derby Blue (23) Derby Red (22), Newark (17). Individual – winner was Stephen Wright (Newark and District) 3lb 12 (p9), from Nathan Hancock (Derby Blue) 2lb 14oz (p30) and Matthew Parkin (Derby red) 2lb (p1).
Cadets: Team– Worksop and District (11), Boston and District (7). Individual – winner was Daniel Austin (Boston) 3lb 7oz (p140) from Ben Taylor (Worksop) 2lb 12oz (p131) and Matthew Godfrey (Worksop) 2lb 7oz (p141).
In the reserve section, Worksop’s Danny Harding took the honours with 2lb 8.5oz (p146), followed by Ryan Bolton (Worksop) 14oz (p145).

World Champion

Alan Scotthorne, one of Worksop junior section’s staunchest supporters, is on top of the world again after making it a record-equalling four times world champion.

His magnificent win took place on the River Vah, Piestany, Slovakia last weekend.

Despite having broken several sections of his pole on both days, he went on to claim a section win on day one and a second in section place on day two, which was enough for him to take the coveted title.

The victory now puts himself and his wife Sandra in a very unique position as the ladies and men’s respective world champions of 2003 – a feat that may never be achieved again.

NFA Centenary Event

The National Federation of Anglers (NFA) will be staging their revised individual championship event tomorrow on the full length of the Fossdyke Navigation Canal stretching from Drinsey Nook all the way through to West Common.

A total of 240 pegs are allocated for this prestigious event which will be attracting some of the country’s top anglers.

Builder Center Competition

Despite working to a very short deadline, the NFA have attracted 1,232 competitors to their brand new Builder Center team knockout competition, which begins tomorrow.

NFA officer in charge of competitions, Mick Turner, said: “The first qualifiers will be on Saturday 13th September and we had to allow competitors time to practice on their venue, so we set the closing date as 24th August.”
“But 26 teams failed to enter on time and entries are still coming in 14 days late!”
With £11,000 in prize money at stake, this is a very successful competition and the nearest qualifying event to Worksop will be taking place on 11th October on the Woodcock’s section of the Fossdyke Navigation Canal.

Angling Courses

Three new angling courses have started in the region as part of the angling partnership between North Notts College and the National Federation of Anglers (NFA).

Local NFA coach Ken Stevenson is delivering 10-week courses at the Three Legged Stool on Raymoth Lane, Worksop, the Sun Inn, North Wheatley and the Butchers Arms at Laneham. Contact him on 01909 721403 for full details.
