Coaching duo take on Redlands class

In our capacity as regional coaches for the National Federation of Anglers, Ken Stevenson and I have volunteered our services to deliver a new extra-curricular angling activity for the Redlands Junior School at Worksop.

The 10 fortnightly sessions started on the 8th January and it is hoped that the 12 youngsters who have enrolled for the course will eventually progress to become competent enough to take part in the local domestic competitions.

Hopefully, they may then progress further with their angling skills and, who knows, they may even end up taking part in trials as potential members of the national squads to represent Worksop and District Anglers Association (WDAA) in future events.

I must admit that the commitment, enthusiasm and gratitude that were shown by these youngsters were very rewarding for Ken and I.

Seeing the smiles on the youngsters’ faces as they left the classroom certainly expressed their feeling of satisfaction and enjoyment at the content of the first session.

This course is being sponsored by the Executive Committee of WDAA and these youngsters were the first group to use the recently acquired equipment that was purchased from the successful Awards for All grant that was received before Christmas.

Thanks are extended to headmaster Mr Honey for allowing us the opportunity to deliver this angling course to youngsters between the ages of nine and 11 years.

They will hopefully become competent anglers acquiring strict morals relating to the Country Code of Practice and learn to appreciate, respect and protect our environment.

Angling Course

The sixth angling course to be delivered by Ken Stevenson – a National Federation of Anglers regional coach – started on Monday 14th January at the Flying Scotsman, Hallcroft Road, Retford.

The FREE course has been set up as part of the partnership arrangements with North Notts College and is being sponsored once again by the Grafton Angling Association and Worksop and District Angler's Association.

There are nine sessions remaining and they are to be run on a weekly basis for two and half-hours from 7pm until 9.30pm. The course is limited to individuals who are 18 years of age onwards. Anyone requiring further details should contact Glyn Williams on 01909 474940.

Angling Star/Gateford Angling Supplies Winter League

A full set of 35 registered anglers took part in the recent winter league event that took place on the John Shaw section of the Chesterfield Canal.

Despite the fact that bloodworm and joker are allowed at this time of year, they were not the favoured bait on this occasion.

After the long period of ice covered conditions, the resident chub were ready for a good feed and they proved to be the species of the day.

Top rod was Roy Butterfield (Ashima Worksop) from peg 111 above Morse Lock with 10lb 2oz of chub that were caught at the bottom of the far shelf on caster.

Richard Wilson (Browning Leegem) was second with 9lb 4oz from peg 125 using similar tactics. Other leading weights were Gary Dodsworth (Ashima Worksop) 7lb 6oz (p123), Chris Bacon (Ashima Worksop), Richard Turner (Ashima Worksop) 4lb 4oz, Keith Walker (Mosborough Tackle) 3lb 14oz.

Section winners were (pegs 110 to 119) Keith Walker (Mosborough Tackle) 3lb 14oz, (120 to 129) John Brockway (Notts Anglers) 3lb, (130 to 139), Richard Turner (Ashima Worksop) 4lb 4oz, (140 to 149) Andrew Pickersgill (Ashima Worksop) 2lb 15.5oz.

Round-up

Worksop United’s midweek Gateford Angling Supplies Winter League was won by Peter Nunn with 15lb 11oz of chub.
