Scott is champion at DARE match

The annual DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) event took place recently at Sandhill Lake courtesy of Worksop and District Anglers Association (WDAA).

It saw a fantastic atmosphere throughout the day with many parents or guardians in attendance giving support to their young protégés in very warm conditions.

Those taking part were split into three age groups – under 12s, under 14s and under 16s – all of whom concentrated very hard in the hope of winning their age groups and the overall title.

Valley School pupil Scott Mellish took the overall title in his first ever major competition with a creditable 3lb 14oz from peg 25.

Overall runner-up was 11-year-old Joshua Wilde with 3lb 11oz from peg 66 on the opposite side of the lake.

The prize winners for the biggest fish in each category were: (under 16s) Lee Alan with a 3lb bream from peg 57, (under 14s) Ashley Tomlinson with a 6oz skimmer, (under 12s) Joshua Wilde with a 10oz skimmer.

The event was sponsored by The DARE Committee, Bassetlaw Trophies, Victoria Carpets, The Marshall Family, Ken Ward Sports and supported by WDAA and the Sandhill Lake Adventure Base.

At the formal presentation event organiser, Glyn Williams, expressed his thanks to all sponsors and gave a special welcome to Elsie Marshall, widow of the late Alf Marshall who had supported this event since its inception in 1996.

He also thanked all of the stewards, the staff of Ken Ward Sports and to John Redfern of the DARE committee for their input in making this another successful event.

DARE chairman Freda Shaw expressed her thanks to everyone involved and said that over 300 children had now passed through this DARE event over the past seven years.

She gave special mention to the hard work of the organiser and she hoped that the competition would go from strength to strength.

Mr Williams added: “We must not lose sight of what this competition is about.”
“It is a community event that is organised with two main objectives in mind. That is for children throughout Bassetlaw to come together for an enjoyable day’s fishing in the hope of them being directed away from getting involved with drugs, violence and alcoholism.”

The full results of the competition are as follows: Overall match winner – Scott Mellish 3lb 14oz. Runner-up – Joshua Wilde 3lb 11oz. Joint third place – Adam Wild and Lee Allan 3lb 10oz. Joint fifth place – Nile Lilley and Louise Worsman 3lb 7oz.
