NFA cadet title for Worksop anglers

Matthew Godfrey of Wales has proven beyond any shadow of a doubt that he is the best Cadet angler in the country.

He obliterated the rest of the field in the National Federation of Anglers, Sensas Angling Championships, staged on the North Banks of the River Nene at Peterborough last Saturday.

Matthew, as team captain, led by example to take both the Cadet individual gold medal and section prize in these prestigious championships.

He also helped the team to a gold medal making it a treble cause for celebration for the group of under 13-year-old anglers.

He wiped the board in the Cadet section of these championships with a magnificent 6.480kgs (14lb 4oz) which was 9lb 8oz heavier than the 4lb 15oz of his nearest rival Alistair Dobson of Leeds Team Gems.

Matthew's catch comprised of 15 bream running to 3lb 8oz complimented with a few small fish.

All these were caught by sticking rigidly to a team plan of alternating the pole on two different lines, as and when necessary, with whole worm fished over chopped worm and caster at nine metres and pinkie or maggot over hemp on a closer line for the bleak and roach at the end peg A1.

Matthew’s performance also caught the eye of Rodney Coldron, the Media Publicity and Sponsorship Consultant for National Federation of Anglers who said: "I will be pushing for Matthew to be included in the Young England squad.”
“I sat behind Matthew for an hour and I was most impressed. I honestly thought on such a hot day he may even win the whole event.”
“I thought it was a great performance by Matthew and will support him even though he did tell me - in my capacity as official photographer - to keep clear of him and take pictures from the grass bank 10-yards away so as not to throw a shadow over his fish line."

The team, which is sponsored by Go Baits of Langold, also managed to secure three individual places in the top 10.

Danny Harding took an individual sixth and a section medal with 1lb 10oz and Luke Stables took ninth place with 1lb 3oz.

These results coupled with the hard work and commitment put in by the other three squad members Kyle Moore, Jason Goulding and Joshua Wilde were sufficient to secure the team gold medal with 18 points out of a possible 24 comprising of two firsts in section, two seconds and two third in section places.

"This is an absolutely brilliant result once again for Worksop and District Angler's Association and Matthew Godfrey in particular,” said delighted sponsor Stewart Goulding of Go Baits.
“His individual result is astounding and it could not have happened to a nicer lad. He really is one to look out for in the future and I feel certain he will be yet another Worksop squad member who will progress to achieving England trials.”
“I am so proud to have been associated with the squad and special mention should be given to team manager Darren Stables and his assistant Kevin Godfrey.”
“Both deserve a lot of the credit for the manner in which they have guided these youngsters, all of whom are under 13 years of age, to achieve this magnificent success and their hour of glory.”
“The Executive Committee of the WDAA and the parents also deserve a big pat on the back for the support that they have given to all three squads."

The Junior A team comprising of Chris Taylor, Terry Foulds, Adam Littler, Mark Smith, Patrick Goulding and Ashley Nicolson all did a magnificent job by securing the team silver medal in their under 16's age group.

As an added bonus the Intermediate squad comprising of Craig Locke, Carl Roley, Brian Searle, Craig Spencer, Andrew Pickersgill, Gavin Tomlinson, also did us proud by winning the team Bronze medal in the under 20's age group.

Craig Spencer just missed out on an individual medal ending up in fourth place with 11.18kgs (24lb 10oz).

DTH Engineering and Gateford Angling Supplies sponsored the Junior and Intermediate squads.
Once again Worksop junior anglers are at the top of the tree with the best overall aggregate team results in the whole of the country for this year's championships, so congratulations are extended to everyone involved in helping to make this another successful campaign.

This includes Darren Stables and Kevin Godfrey (Cadets), Glen Foulds, Paul Goulding and Gordon Smith (Juniors and Intermediates), the parents and the sponsors, DTH Engineering, Go Baits of Langold, and Gateford Angling Supplies.

Darren Stables is already looking for new members to take part in next years championship events so if you feel that your son or daughter have the ability and potential to represent Worksop at such an high level without parental support and that they will be under 13 years of age on the second Saturday in August 2004, then contact Darren on 07776 118050.
