Butt secures grants for future of angling

Garry Butt – the Worksop and District Anglers’ Association (WDAA) Junior Education Officer, and also secretary of affiliated Wales and Kiveton Park Colliery Angling Club, has worked tirelessly over the last nine months.

He has been putting effort into gaining grants for fishing equipment to encourage young children from our area to take up the sport of angling, as Garry’s objective is to help as many children as he can.

Initially, he successfully applied for a grant from South Rotherham Community Chest for £405 to provide 15 life jackets to be worn by the trainees while angling.

He then went on to gain his second successful grant of £4,946 from Awards for All to provide angling equipment to cover all three disciplines of coarse fishing – pole, float and feeder.

This has allowed children to take part in angling activities under the supervision of National Federation Coaches.

His third success was gained from the South Yorkshire Police ABC Awards to the value of £2000.

This enabled him to obtain further equipment for coarse, fly and sea fishing to help with costs of equipment, pegging fees, trophies, presentations and administration costs for licence fees.
All the grants that Garry has received has allowed him to provide angling coaching and competitions for children between the ages of eight and 16, both through his own angling club and WDAA activities.

Earlier this year, he organised a match for 43 youngsters and on the day prizes were provided for each child by numerous sponsors from the local community.

Garry then organised an annual triathlon competition that catered for up to 52 children who took part in the competition over a period of two months.

Points were accumulated on an aggregate basis to encourage children to improve their angling and make friends.

This resulted in last week’s presentation night when, once again, prizes were provided for all of those who had taken part in the competition.

These were donated by various sponsors throughout the area. The special guests on the night were president and vice president of the National Federation of Anglers Ken Ball and David Kent, plus three times individual world champion Alan Scotthorne and his wife Sandra, the current ladies individual world champion.

Through the ABC award Garry, in partnership with Sam Allen, a development worker for Rotherham Council, held a classroom session and three matches on Horseshoe Lake in Wales.

The classroom session was held on 17th October and the three matches were held on 21st and 22nd October.

A total of 50 children were invited to take part but due to weather conditions only 32 turned up over the two day events.

Each child again received a prize that had been donated by various sponsors, coupled with a certificate of attendance.

Among the volunteers on these occasions were Pcs Howard Saul, Tina Jones and Roger Lispki.
Anyone interested in volunteering their services for future events can contact Garry on Worksop 01909 770546.
