Goulding earns win

The very popular BW Ken Ward Sports Commemorative Match saw 31 youngsters line up on the John Shaw section of the Chesterfield Canal last Friday evening.

The British Waterways and Ken Ward Sports of Worksop-sponsored event – supported by Bassetlaw Trophies – was hosted by the Grafton Angling Association to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the opening of Morse Lock to facilitate boat navigation up to Kiveton Park.

The young anglers fished from 6pm until 8.45pm and they did exceptionally well in this short space of time with all 10 competitors in the under 13s category catching fish, as did the majority of those in the 13 to 16 age group.

The overall match winner was 14-year-old Patrick Goulding (Go Baits/WDAA Juniors) with 2.65kgs (5lb12oz) from peg 107 using bronze maggot presented tight across on the pole. Patrick’s catch comprised mainly of small chub.

The Langold-based youngster is now putting a string of successes together and is now established as the BW annual champion.

He follows in the footsteps of former winners Michael Blower, Andrew Pickersgill, Marc Foy, Anne Foy, Gavin Tomlinson and Shaun Kearsley.

Overall match runner-up was Daniel Ball (Worksop) with 2.2kgs (4lb13oz) from peg 112, who used similar tactics but alternating his line down the track and fishing the far features.
Top rod in the under 13s was Thomas Davenport (Worksop) who caught a creditable 1.55kgs (3lb 6oz) from peg 121, closely followed by Danny Harding (Clowne) with 1.35kgs (2lb 15.5oz).

New sponsors

The National Federation of Anglers has teamed up with building materials giant Builder Center to re-launch the 22-year-old Team Knockout competition in a new format with more than £11,000 in prizes, including £4,000 for the winning team.

The Builder Center Team Knockout Event, will be an open entry for teams of five who could end up fishing two qualifying rounds in their local region.

There will then be a semi-final in April before six teams of five (30 anglers) battle it out in May in an all expenses paid two-day grand final at the stunning White Acres Fishery complex in Cornwall.

The Team Knockout was first introduced to the match scene in 1981 when teams of 12 competed against each other on a home and away basis.

Teams were grouped into regions and a draw made – similar to the FA Cup.

This time round the teams will be drawn in pairs and then in blocks of three pairs (six teams). The pairs will fish a knockout against each other but they will also be competing in a 30-peg match.

NFA competitions executive, Mick Turner, said: “This is a great package spread over nine months and we hope it will appeal to the nations match groups at all levels.”
“We have reverted to a weight competition for this event up to the final, when points will apply, to give the lesser known teams the chance to beat the country’s top match groups.”
“We expect a bumper entry and anglers are advised to send off their application form early to beat the 23rd August deadline.”
Builder Center marketing manager, Stuart Evers, added: “Interested anglers can collect an entry form from one of our 200 branches throughout the country.”
“We are looking forward to a successful link to anglers through this competition.”
And NFA President, Ken Ball, said: “I am delighted with this five-figure sponsorship which will give the sport a real boost.”
Entry to the competition for NFA and Builder Center customers is £50 each team of five and £70 per team for non NFA members.
Entry forms can be obtained from Builder Center branches, NFA club secretaries, the NFA at Halliday House, Egginton Junction, Derbyshire DE65 6GU, or on the NFA’s new website www.nfadirect.net. They will also be in tackle shops from 28th July.
