Ex-World Champ speaks

Former World Champion Tom Pickering visited Jays nightclub as a guest speaker for the North Notts College angling course that is being delivered by NFA coach Ken Stevenson.

Tom’s theme for the evening was ‘keep it simple’. He spent two hours demonstrating and explaining his personal preference of how to set-up a simple pole rig and the basic shotting pattern required for all of his fishing sessions – whether canals, rivers or lakes.

He said he had used one simple pattern since he was 14 years of age and it has brought him huge success over the past 34 years.

He also spent time explaining his techniques for elasticating sections three and two of a pole for carp fishing, eliminating the number one section altogether and during the question and answer session he explained his preferred types of ground bait and feeding methods.

Tom’s philosophy of keeping it simple when preparing a pole rig for carp fishing was to use a 4 x 14 medium bristle float attached to 0.18 main line (6. 5 to 7lb line).

He said he also used three number 9 bulk shots and three number 10 or 11 droppers with the ‘tell tail’ shot from these three pressed tight up to his main line loop.

He informed those in attendance that he uses an eight to nine inch hook length attached loop to loop and he very rarely puts a shot on his slightly finer terminal tackle.

To the amazement of the audience, he said he nearly always fishes ‘over depth’ between three to six inches (75 to 150mm).

When he is fishing bloodworm and joker he sometimes fishes with his bait just touching or slightly off of the bottom.

He emphasised that it was important not to have too long a line between the pole tip and the pole float and his preference was six to eight inches maximum (150 to 200mm) and once the float has sunk under the water indicating a bite, he just lifts into the fish and does not strike left or right.

He never strikes at the first sign of movement on the float he always waits until it has sunk out of sight and he nearly always uses an orange tipped float that he can see quite easily under the water, giving him the required knowledge of a positive bite.

Throughout the whole session, he kept emphasising that the techniques that he implemented were his personal choice and that there was no special secret to his successes.

He had won a major national event the day before on the River Nene at Peterborough with over 44lb of fish and he maintained that he had kept it simple fishing the pole at 5 metres or 13 metres, using the simple three bulk and three dropper shotting pattern.

However, he did state that this recent success was all down to a team plan of using a special type of ground bait imported from Belgium – the name of which for some unknown reason he could not remember.

So much for his original statement about there being no secret to his many successes!
The two hour session passed very quickly and those in attendance showed their appreciation to Tom in the customary manner with a robust round of applause.
